No it isn't. it just a file that tells the computer what to do once the device is inserted. without it windows wont be able to ask you if you want to play the music files with media player or open the drive with explorer and stuff like that. theres no need to worry about it. |

autorun.inf is a file that provides instructions to windows o the action to take with the inserted media. typically, its an instruction to run a file on a the flash drive/dvd most of the time, autorun.inf files are installed by malware this is especially the case if they can't be deleted, because they are tied to a process they have started malware can overwrite harmless autorun.inf fils on flash drives all my removable media(flash an external drives) has autorun.inf files i put in them to provide them with icons rather than the drab windows hard drive indicators @op, you have a problem - no question about it try malwarebytes antimalware |

actually autorun, inf is not a virus ok let me try to explain but it might take a while: when you insert your removable device and some program starts running automatically it as a result of autorun, inf; when a pc has autorun enabled (which windows has by default), everytime a removable device is inserted the system looks for the autorun.inf file that contains some instruction that should be run automatically. Even in your cds like your windows installation cd there is an autorun.inf there, that is why you pop in your cd and the installer starts running automatically without you even clicking on the icon now there are some malware that spread by putting an entry in autorun.inf and copying to writable removable media - particularly flash drives, so that once the flash drive is inserted into a pc with autorun enabled the pc automatically runs the file and the instruction in the file get executed so if autorun.inf keeps getting copied odds that your pc is infected but the problem is not the autorun, rather it's some program already running that keeps writing the file to the flash drive; advice: get a good and up to date antivirus and scan your pc |
