WHAT DID THE KWARA STATE GOVERNOR DO WITH OVER N66BILLION RECEIVED IN 2016?

The recently released State Viability Index by The Economic Confidential Magazine states that, in 2016 alone, through Federal Government Allocation (FAA), Kwara State Government received Forty Nine Billion, Two Hundred and Twenty Two Million, Five Hundred and Forty Two Thousand and Two Hundred and Eighty Nine Naira (N49, 222,542,289).

The Government also received in tax from hard working Kwarans, a whopping sum of Seventeen Billion, Two Hundred and Fifty Three Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty Nine Thousand and Five Hundred and Fifty Nine Naira (N17,253, 829,559).

In total, Kwara State Government earned Sixty Six Billion, Four Hundred and Seventy Six Million, Three Hundred and Seventy One Thousand, Eight Hundred and Forty Eight Naira (N66,476,371,848). This is apart from other resources that came into the state, such as the Paris Club Loan and other sharing, especially to the Local Government.

With the huge amount being generated as internally generated revenue, this means that Kwarans are the fifth most paying tax in Nigeria, despite being one of the least paying state in Nigeria. By this, it is expected that the people and their communities will be recording massive developmental strides, but unfortunately, the reverse is the case. Despite earning lesser income than their colleagues in other states, Kwarans are paying more in taxes and despite paying more in taxes, Kwarans are not getting half of what other states are getting.

Those following the Kwara polity may recall that in 2014, i wrote a publication in which i quoted all the earnings of Kwara State workers. In that report, which was based on the pay slip of Kwara Workers, i stated thus, '' that, from level 1 to 15, no one single civil servant in Kwara State earn up to N85,000 salary, no matter their years of service or qualification. Level 15 civil servant in Kwara state earn N84,114.66'' and till date, the situation has not changed.

It is in spite this low income that Kwarans paid higher taxes than most states of the federation.

One must then begin to ask, what has the Kwara State government been doing with all these huge resources?
