This is the great Imo River that flow through Imo, Abia and Rivers state before empting into the Atlantic Ocean. How magnificent this river is and what is its ancient history, here I will discuss it with you.

Before you talk about the great Imo River, it best I talk about the state where it has it source of flow being Imo State. The State of Imo was created on February 3, 1976 out of the old East Central State by the then regime of General Murtala Mohammed. It begets Abia State in 1991 when it was carve from it. Imo State is one o the 36 States of Nigeria and lies in the south east region of Nigeria with Owerri as its capital and largest city. It occupies the area between the lower River Niger and the upper and Middle Imo River.

You will recall that I earlier told you that the state is situated in the south eastern region of Nigeria; it covers an area of 5,530 square kilometers. Imo state shares boundaries with Enugu and Ebonyi states to the north, Anambra state to the west, rivers state to the south.
Rivers and Lakes
You will also note that the Orashi River has its source in Imo state. The Imo River, being the Major river in the state, drains through Abia state where it is joined by the Aba River from the North and Akwa ibom state into the Atlantic ocean. There are the Njaba River, Oguta Lales, Utu River and Awbana Rivers in the state. Otamiri River and its 9.2 km length tributary, the Nworie River flow in the state. There are other rivers and creeks in the state including Onas creek in Ohaji/Egbema LGA, Okitankwo River in Umudi as well as the Ohia and Efuru Rivers in Okigwe
The Imo river, called Imo Mmiri in the Igbo language is in southeastern Nigeria and flows 240 kilometers into the Atlantic ocean. Its estuary is around 40 kilometers wide and the river has an annual discharge of 4 cubic kilometers with 26,000 hectares of wetland. The Imo Rivers has two tributaries which are the Otamiri and Oramirukwa rivers. The river was cleared under the colonial British government in 197, 1908 and 1911, first to Aba and then to Udo near Umuahia
Funny enough the River has a god that is being worship. The deity or Alusi o the imo river is the female imo mmiri who communities surrounding the river believe to be the owner of the river. The imo river features an 830 Metre (2,720 ft) bridge at the crossing between Rivers state, Ngor Okpuala and the Akwa ibom..
