Jos Crisis Continued by lepere(m): 2:12am On Jan 20, 2010
Couldn't believe the Jos crisis continued and even escalated.
  Sporadic shooting pervaded
Jos, the Plateau State
capital yesterday as renewed
fighting has forced the state
government and the joint
security task force to declare
a 24-hour curfew in Jos
and Bukuru metropolis.
Meanwhile, the death toll
is increasing by the minute
and put at over 100 at the
last count.
Eyewitnesses said, corpses of
victims litter the streets in
places including Bukuru,
Angwa Keke and Angwa
Kere which, until Tuesday,
had remained peaceful.
The statement issued by the
state Commissioner for
Information and
Communication, Mr.
Gregory Nyelong said the
decision became necessary in
view of the escalation of
violence to all parts of the
state capital and advised
residents not to take laws
into their hands.
He advised all government
workers and those in the
private sectors to vacate
their offices immediately and
remain indoors as security
operatives take over the
control of the fragile
situation in the state capital.
Arrests have so far been put
at over 60. This includes
those arrested with police
and army uniforms.
More soldiers and mobile
policemen from other parts of
the country are manning all
major streets but are in the
early hours of the day taken
unaware by both Christians
and Muslim youths burning
houses and maiming people in
the interior.
There are strong indication
that many worship centres
and house had been razed
down judging by thick smoke
that filled the air. Some
visitors and passers-by have
lost their lives in the
renewed fight after what
seemed like a break on
Monday.
The youths have also
barricaded entrance to the
state capital and into areas
where they believe their
religious faithful are in the
majority to prevent other
group from moving in to
attack.
It was also observed that
police and soldiers were also
clashing in some areas which
had even led to the death
of a mobile police man who
was said to have
accidentally shot an army
officer in the head and in
retaliation another soldier
shot him instantly.
Meanwhile two past
governors in the state have
met with Governor Jonah
Jang with the promise to
work with him toward the
restoration of normalcy in
the state capital.
Former Governor Joshua
Dariye and Jang met at
Chief Solomon Lar’s house
on Monday evening to work
out modalities on how to find
a permanent solution to the
spate of crises in the state.
The Plateau State Inter-
Religious Council headed by
both the Archbishop of Jos,
Most Reverend Ignatius
Kaigama and the Emir of
Wase, Haruna Abdullahi
Maikano met on the same
issue, calling on their
followers to be calm.
