Trafalgar Square evacuated as armed cops sealed off London tourist hotspot

ARMED police today evacuated Trafalgar Square in London after a "suspicious package" was found.

Armed police evacuated Trafalgar Square in London after a "suspicious package" was found at Duncannon Street this afternoon.

Charing Cross tube station was also closed as a precaution.

Specialist officers swooped in to deal with the incident – which is now under control.

Met Police tweeted: "The incident in Charing Cross has now been stood down. Cordons will be lifted shortly."

"Police called to reports of a suspicious item in Charing Cross. Not being treated as terrorist related at this time. No injuries," the force wrote earlier.

Officers confirmed they received a call alerting them to the package at 2.40pm.

Bus services to the area were being terminated and traffic around the iconic tourist hotspot temporarily halted.

A worker nearby tweeted: "Trafalgar Square has been shut down due to a suspect package and our offices have been evacuated. Absolutely terrifying."

"Currently in an office in Trafalgar Square, building lockdown after heavily armed police have found a suspicious package in the square. Mad," another wrote.

A third said: "Trafalgar Square has been evacuated due to a suspect package. I'm sat in an office facing the square #TrafalgarSquare."

It comes just days after Saturday's horrific attack at London Bridge, during which three armed jihadis killed eight and injured scores more during a savage rampage through the popular tourist hotspot.

Police confirmed three arrests made in east London earlier today were part of their ongoing investigation into the shocking incident.
