The governing board of the Nigeria National Merit Award has been inaugurated.

Inaugurating the board in Abuja, the acting secretary to the government of the federation, Habiba Lawal tasked the board members to maintain high level of integrity in the discharge of their duties.

The Nigeria National Merit Award was established in 1979 to select deserving Nigerians who have contributed to national development in their various field for conferment of the award.

The acting secretary to the government of the federation explained that the nation appreciates the services of sincere Nigerians in ensuring good governance in the country.

“Permit me to express the hope that you will severally and collectively bind your appointment into this prestigious board to the niche of integrity it cut out for itself. It fought hard and defied all odds to maintain the high level of integrity that has been synonymous with NNOM in spite of social, political and even professional pressure.

“I charge you all to dig into your moral, ethics and even religious reservoir.”

She stated.

Speaking on behalf of the board members, the chairman, Professor Shekarau Yakubu Aku said they will ensure that merit was promoted in all sector to encourage hard work and commitment to nation building.

“Merit is very key in our nation’s future.”

He said.

“We are renowned professionals in various fields of human endeavour, and promise to bring the wealth of our experience to the benefit of the board.

“The NNMA was designed as an order of dignity on the promotion of merit and academic, intellectual distance on a national scale.”

He added.

The governing board members include Mr Ibrahim Namadi as the acting secretary and Dr Amina Shamaki representing the SGF. Others are Professor Shiekh Ahmed Abdullah, Professor Muhammad Hassan, Professor Joseph J. Andy, Professor Adele Jinadu, Professor Andrew Nok and Professor Laz E. N. Ekwueme.
