Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been released by Manchester United after the Premier League confirmed he was not on the club's list of retained players for the 2017-18 campaign.

The Swedish striker suffered a cruciate ligament injury in United's Europa League quarter-final win over Anderlecht back in April and missed the club's final 10 matches of the season.

Goal reported on Thursday that Ibrahimovic was set to be let go by Jose Mourinho's side, despite an impressive 28-goal campaign following his move from PSG last summer.

United had the option to extend the 35-year-old's contract by an extra year, although the knee injury, that forced him to miss the Europa League final win over former club Ajax, has ultimately made up the club's mind.

Despite having undergone successful surgery, it is expected to take moths before Ibrahimovic will be in a position to return to action once again.

And thus Mourinho has decided against waiting for the veteran attacker to make a full recovery, with the club actively looking for a replacement in the summer transfer window.
