Nigeria put in an awful display in their first AFCON 2017 Qualifier played at the Goodswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state. Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau scored two second half goals as the Eagles were defeated 2 - 0 by their rivals.

The victory which is South Africa's first in a competitive match in Nigeria saw the Eagles start brightly. WIlfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo seeing early efforts just go wide. Kelechi Iheanacho also reacted too slowly to meet a pass by Iwobi with Khune acting as a sweeper-keeper and clearing the danger.
South Africa grew into the game and Vilekazi saw an effort strike the post after Akpeyi failed to clear a cross from Dolly from the net. The second half saw the Eagles start brightly once again, Ndidi seeing a volley go over the bar.

Things would however change when SA who were already playing on the counter finally opened the scoring. Elderson Echiejile thought he was fouled and was unable to track back on the right as Zwane's cross is headed in by Tokelo Rantie. Bafana Bafana could have added a second when Rantie and Zwane combined to free the latter on the right but his shot hit the post with Akpeyi beaten.

The second goal came when Dolly fed substitute Tau before the half way line to leave the attacker free to run half a field to meet Akpeyi one on one. The left footed wide man took out Akpeyi and slotted into the net to give SA a 2 - 0 victory.

Super Eagles now face a uphill task to qualify for the 2019 African Cup of Nations. Libya defeated Seychelles 4 - 0 in the other group F game. FT: Nigeria 0 - 2 South Africa (AFCON 2019 Qualifier)
