Nearly two years after Wizkid made an unusual radio hit off a sparse production and convoluted themes with “In My Bed”, “African Bad Gyal” comes bearing mark of the same Wizkid. Despite Chris Brown’s presence on the single, “African Bad Gyal” presents a less layered Wizkid with all the bearings of pop but without all of the quasi-Carribean tints that fails to indemnify Wiz increasing out-of-touch Afropop delivery.

Thankfully, “African Bad Gyal”, prepared by Sarz, the same producer that helped Wizkid build a chunk of his portfolio of hits.“African Bad Gyal” is a tad faster than much of whatever Afropop has become thanks to Tekno and Mr Eazi, but the blaring sirens and four-on-the-floor drums litter the baseline, indicating the inherently noisy instrumentation had a greater purpose. True to the tempo, Wiz belts in with a confident hello of some sort, yelling, “dem no born me yesterday”: an iteration that was intended as a witty African quip but sounded like an attestation of Wizkid’s new wave king status.

Even when it comes together, the point of “African Bad Gyal” is not quite clear. But we have gotten used to this kind of Afropop from Wizkid; where the message is in the rhythm and everything else slathered in between exists only to gel that into a full song. There is a unifying element from both Chris Brown and Wizkid, as both artists clearly state their appreciation of women from all over the world, and that’s just about enough to remind us Wizkid has been giving Africa good vibes for years, and now he’s boldly shipping it to the rest of the world.
