The senate, on Thursday, requested that the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja be renamed after the late Maryam Babangida. This is for her contribution to the development of women in the country.

This followed a motion brought to the senate by Zainab Kure (PDP, Niger State), the wife of the former Niger State governor and about 20 other senators.

Mrs Kure said the late first lady made history through her Better Life Program for Rural Women, as it was the first national program by the wife of a president to bring issues, concerning the plight of women, to the forefront of national discourse.

"Women in Nigeria, and indeed Africa, will surely miss the reassuring presence, elegance, beauty personified, ebony charm, style, endless smile and above all the compassionate support, love and care to women of all creed, ethnicity and class of late Maryam Babangida," Mrs Kure extolled.

Other senators took the opportunity to pay their last tribute to the woman, whom they described as an Amazon. All the senators, in their contributions, eulogised Mrs Babangida's deeds and virtue both as a wife and first lady.

As part of its resolution, they also agreed to offer condolences to the family of the former military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida, the government of Niger State and the people of Delta State, her home state.

Late Mrs Babangida died of ovarian cancer at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)'s Johnson Comprehensive Cancer Centre in the United States on December 27, 2009, when the senators were on vacation.
