Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, the Nigerian affiliate of American corporate superpower ExxonMobil has undergone a trying year of allegations of fraud, mismanagement, institutional racism and poor employee morale that forebodes poorly for up to 25% of Nigeria’s oil production if it indeed follows through with threats to leave Nigeria entirely.

Alarm bells started ringing back in May 2016 when an internal audit of the company’s support operations yielded some startling results. According to an insider, it appeared that the company had lost up to $80M, over a period of 7 years, to shady lifting, marine and diesel supply patterns. For a company that at its peak lifted over 660,000 barrels from its Akwa Ibom platforms per day, this may have been initially seen a drop in the bucket. However, a more comprehensive review indicated that some members of staff were in on the scam.
