The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for electrification of eight Federal Universities, one Teaching Hospital and the host communities. The project, which targets over 300,000 students and others within their immediate environment, is the first phase of government’s plans to power 37 federal universities and seven teaching hospitals in the country. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which signed the MoU on behalf of the Federal Government with the universities, said the project aims to provide uninterrupted power supply through off-grid captive power plants in a bid to resolve power to the tertiary institutions. Its Head of Special Projects, Mrs. Anita Otubu, said the first phase, which would be carried out in nine institutions would be completed in 2018 and would benefit over 300,000 students and staff. The federal universities and teaching hospital that signed the MOU with the REA are the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; Bayero University, Kano; Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto; Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi; Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka; University of Lagos, Akoka; Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Delta; Obafemi Awolowo University and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Osun. Meanwhile, former Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola yesterday tasked the Federal Government to increase funding for the nation’s universities. He noted that in an interconnected world, solving Africa’s climate change, food, national, health and security challenges would amount to failure if not addressed within a global framework. Okebukola spoke at Mountain Top University’s third lecture titled: “More Investment, More Harvest: Agenda for Enhancing Social Responsibility of Nigerian Universities,” held in Lagos. “Proprietors and managers of Nigerian universities will need to at least quadruple the financial investment in the institutions to give hope that there will be a doubling of the scores on social relevance,” he said. source: http://guardian.ng/news/fg-signs-mou-on-electrification-of-varsities-teaching-hospitals/ |

They said off national grid and I ask how would the power be generated. A lot of white elephant projects with no detailed way of reaching the goal |
Re: FG Signs Mou On Electrification Of Varsities, Teaching Hospitals by Nobody: 7:56am On Jun 23, 2017 |
Its a welcome development but would have been more welcomed if it was matched with a corresponding increase in power generation to the national grid. Also in need of dire power are industrial zones and clusters to stimulate the economy and encourage SMEs |

moniker234: These ultimatum is very achievable if financing is made available for the projects. These are just power distribution projects that require extra power injection substations to be linked through existing feeders. No big deal if only money will be made available on time and the usual Nigerian factor is not allowed to creep in. Piece of cake |

This is real funny. Many nairalanders evade this thread because it isn't a negative report against the federal government. |

mapet: Why cant you simply answer the question on how hospitals can run off grid in Nigeria apart from using diesel engine powered generators. |
Re: FG Signs Mou On Electrification Of Varsities, Teaching Hospitals by mapet: 9:28pm On Jun 23, 2017 |
Pesuzok: Bros, Ok let me keep it elementary 1. Imagine your generator, inverter or Solar panels at home, how they give you electricity when Disco fails to supply power? 2. Imagine that on a larger scale and made permanent 3. Off-grid simply means is not routed through the grip 4. A Gas-powered generators or mini-power plant can be installed in these hospitals and there are Companies that have run gas pipelines to industrial areas and homes. These companies supply Gas (e.g. GasLink - an Oando subsidiary) to these generators or mini-plants enabling it to have power uninterrupted. This model has been run by Nestle in Ilupeju and Agbara, Academy Press in Ilupeju for almost a decade 5. Lagos state government under Fashola did a pilot in conjunction with DFID to power schools, Hospitals and rural communities. This is what Osinbajo's office is replicating on a larger scale today. The thirty something year old woman (Engr. (Ms) Damilola Ogunbiyi) 6. Even if the hospital cannot afford to build power or solar-plant or wind-mill, there are private Gencos who will build power-plants and supply to customers.
