Had this issue for weeks. got a new android device a Boom J8 and tried to connect to my Toshiba pc running on windows 8.1 via USB to transfer some files. but it kept popping up this error message "windows xp needs to identify this device.service pack 3 and windows media player 10 or higher required" which was really annoying.
luckily i came across this fix procedure online ...thought i should share.
Its really a driver (or an incorrect drive allocated issue, due to be knocked out by updates) issue.
1. In Nexus 7, 10, make sure usb debugging mode is enabled, and go into storage and hit menu USB connection and ensure usb mode is set to MTP. Not necessary for all devices, some are set by default e.g in Techno Boom J8.
2. Connect Android phone to PC.
3. Open windows device manager find ADB Driver or “other devices- unknown” (May be Acer) then scroll down. Right click and select "update driver software".
4. Select "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
6. With "show compatible hardware" checkbox ticked, two or three drivers should be shown.
(a) Android ADB Interface. and (b) MTP User Device or Composite USB device.
7. Select (b) above and click Next.
8. Device should now appear.
