The world’s first ATM was unveiled by Barclays at its branch in Enfield, North London, on June 27 1967.


This month also marked 30 years since Barclays introduced the debit card to the UK, on June 3 1987.


The first Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in the word, which brought transformation in the way people obtain and use cash, clocked 50 years on Tuesday.


The world’s first ATM was unveiled by Barclays at its branch in Enfield, North London, on June 27 1967.


As a way to celebrate the golden anniversary, the ATM was transformed into gold and Barclays also added a commemorative plaque and placed a red carpet in front for its users.


Scottish inventor Shepherd-Baron created the original ATM and was commissioned by Barclays to create six cash dispensers, the first of which was installed at Enfield.


However, the first person to withdraw from the ATM was English actor Reg Varney, who starred in the British TV comedy show “On The Buses.”


Despite the fact that there are new technology such as online and mobile banking competiting with the ATM, the ATM remains popular 50 years on.


Currently, there are three million cash machines across the globe and the U.K. alone dispensed 175 billion pounds in 2016 from 70,000 cash machines
