Toyota Car Recall Hits Us, Europe And China by blacksta(m): 2:44pm On Jan 28, 2010
Toyota has announced the recall of vehicles in the US, Europe and China over concerns about accelerator pedals getting stuck on floor mats.
The firm has announced plans to recall 1.1 million more cars in the US a day after saying it was suspending sales of eight popular US models.
According to an application to China's quality control office, it wants to recall 75,552 RAV4 vehicles there.
Toyota also announced 750 jobs could go at its Burnaston plant in the UK.
The positions would be lost before August.
"[Last year] was a tough year for Toyota Manufacturing UK," the carmaker said.
"This decision is related to production capacity and efficiency, not to production volumes."
Toyota said no decision had been taken about how the jobs would go, but added that it was not currently considering compulsory redundancies.

One would have expected this topic to generate a lot of responses, but suprisingly, it did not. The only fortunate thing is that the problem of Toyota accelerator pedals sticking to the floor may not be as bad as previously thought.

According to Toyota, this does not happen overnight. "The condition is rare and generally does not occur suddenly. It seems to occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position". http://pressroom.toyota.com/pr/tms/xxxxx-153289.aspx

Apparently, the problem is not new. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, problems with sudden acceleration of Toyota vehicles have led to 19 deaths in the last 10 years. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123098947

I heard on National Public Radio a few days ago that this problem is limited to pedals supplied by a company called CTS. Those supplied by another company called Denzo does not appear to have the problem. They advise that you check your pedal assembly and see if it is stamped "CTS" or "Denzo".

Below are the affected models according to Toyota:

* Certain 2009-2010 RAV4,
* Certain 2009-2010 Corolla,
* 2009-2010 Matrix,
* 2005-2010 Avalon,
* Certain 2007-2010 Camry,
* Certain 2010 Highlander,
* 2007-2010 Tundra,
* 2008-2010 Sequoia

Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids are not affected by this action and will remain for sale.

Further, Camry, RAV 4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin with "J" are not affected and will remain for sale.
