Data Science In Nigeria by curiousmugu: 11:12am On Jun 30, 2017 |
I'm a data science aspirant but lately I have been getting discouraged because it seems like nothing is going on in the country as regards data science. I type a search query on google with different variations of 'data science in nigeria' and I get absolutely nothing. The highest I see is about a boot camp that was held in January. It appears that learning data science in Nigeria would be a waste of time - I stand to be corrected. I can't see firms doing stuff with it and if I see Individuals doing it, they do it as side projects. Enough with my ranting. So, I need help. Is Nigeria not yet ripe for data science or I am not search right? I see blogs talking about how data science would change the country.. Bla, bla bla and bla., yeah, right? All talk and no work PS-Whatever the replies may be, I don't have plans of quitting, I just want to act smart. Thanks Seun, mods. Please do something. This can go a long way to help me and people having same issue |

Wetin you want make them do? It's not like there are no data science and machine learning coders in Nigeria(I also do data science), it's just that the popularity of the field in general is suppressed by the need of the field amongst Nigerian companies and different organizations at large. Take Natural Language Processing for example: Foreign companies or even government agencies cherish this because of the need to ascertain people's sentiments towards their services amongst other benefits, so as to make effective decisions. How many Nigerian government agencies or businesses wey u know get time for this one? To even worsen the case, is that we are generally not tech inclined(at least to an extent), so most time the benefits of data science might not always be within our range of perception. I started out with linear regression and learning automated stock predictions.(though i traded virtually with variables ) It was fun but you don't need me to point out to you that the need for this field(though important!) is not just "there" with the general Nigerian mentality towards stock trading. Even my lecturer made a joke one day in class, that his dividend one time was not even up to the paper that it was printed on. Statistics from stackoverflow last year revealed that only 1.6% and 0.1% of programmers on the site are into data science and Machine learning respectively. Obviously there would majorly be spread amongst countries in the west and Asia where there are more tech inclined organizations. So this should logically draw another reason when comparing with Nigeria. So when growth of data science and ML services is seemingly "not there yet", most Nigerian programmers will definitely move towards web and android where the money is quick and relatively sure than spending time on k-means clustering. And finally is the cost of data science services and the time it takes to learn compared to others. But we are getting there... neahyo's thread for data science tutorial with R programming language should be fun. Though i use python. 1 Like |

pls explain the diffence btw data science n statistic |
Re: Data Science In Nigeria by Dermie: 3:59pm On Jul 01, 2017 |
stevenemin: That's kinda hard to really explain, unless you understand the concept involved. Although they are similar, but some how different. Statistics is part of Data Science, while Data Science is like combining Software Engineering with Statistics. Read more here: Data Science, Statistics |

stevenemin: ..... This has deep roots in the history of computers. "A data scientist is someone who is better at statistics than any software engineer and better at software engineering than any statistician." https://priceonomics.com/whats-the-difference-between-data-science-and/

For there to be data science there needs to be data. Nigeria loves the paper based collection system too much. But i believe in a few years when there are enough databases around. Data Scientists will be considered very valuable 1 Like |

Now that i am here if anyone is interested in forming a Kaggle team to become better then please comment below. At the moment i am still getting myself up to scratch but it would help if there are others as passionate. |

stevenemin: A Data Scientist is someone who takes huge datasets and cleans them up with algorithms to get a better understanding of what is going on. Whilst knowing statistics is important, a Data Scientist often has a computing background as well. 2 Likes |

Data science and machine learning are gradually becoming the thing in Nigeria. When Nigeria fully adopts it, those who take the time now to learn it will reap the reward. 3 Likes |

stevenemin: Machine language? LOL that has nothing to do with machine learning. If you want to learn a low-level language, I recommend X86 Assembly. |

An interesting thread! curiousmugu: I will advise you NEVER quite no matter what! The reason data science is still seemingly embryonic in the country is because we are backward technologically. We will get there sooner than you expect. But before you get into the statistics, algebra, coding and pattern communication, I will advise you understand data itself. Most trainings will jump straight to R, Python, Tableau, etc, but without understanding how the data interconnect - quantity, relevance, correctness, sources, you will become a surfer with great muscles and physic, but face problems catching the wave and staying safe. One major challenge I have seen apart from data management skills - analyst, analytics, scientist et al, is very limited data. Business are not gathering enough data to work with yet, and they don't know how to. That is an area they should focus on, if properly directed! 1 Like |
