1966 Coup: “THE IGBOS NOW VINDICATED AND EXONERATED”
Olusegun Obasanjo.

"Let the truth be told. The People involved in that so called 1966 “Igbo coup” were:
✴1. Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu (Midwest Region Igbo)
✴2. Major Adewale Ademoyega (Western Region – Yoruba), author of “Why we struck”
✴3. Capt. G. Adeleke (Western Region – Yoruba).
✴4. Maj. Ifeajuna (Midwestern Region – Igbo).
✴5. Lt. Fola Oyewole (Western Region – Yoruba), author of “The reluctant rebel”.
✴6. *Lt. Robert (Bob) Egbiko* (Midwestern Region – Ishan).
✴7. Lt. Tijani Katsina (Northern Region – Hausa/Fulani).
✴8. Lt. O. Olafemiyan (Western Region – Yoruba).
✴9. Capt. Gibson Jalo (Northern Region – Bachama).
✴10. Capt. Swanton (Northern Region – Middle Belt).
✴11. Lt. Hope Harris Eghagha (Midwest – Urhobo).
✴12. Lt. Dag Warribor (Midwest – Ijaw)
✴13. 2nd Lt. Saleh Dambo (Northern Nigeria -Hausa)
✴14. 2nd Lt. John Atom Kpera (Northern Nigeria-Tiv).
The reason for calling the 1966 Coup an Igbo exercise is because the government of Nigeria has refused teaching Nigerian History in our schools. And core North has been busy misinforming Nigerians that the 1966 coup was an Igbo coup.
…………………………
❎Yoruba – Igbo fact sheet. This article has no tribal sentiments. Pls add ur own facts if u have any. History will always tell us what happened.
1. Azikiwe defeated Awolowo to become the first Nigerian Premier of Western Nigeria (present Southwest plus Edo and Delta States). Awolowo instead of forming Opposition, rather formed Egbe Omo Yoruba and used it to intimidate Yorubas that won election on NCNC platform to cross carpet and join him against Azikiwe. This was the first parliamentary coup in Nigeria.
2. Awolowo from then on, started indoctrination of Yorubas against the “threat of Igbo domination”. That is how the incurable seed of fear of Igbos was sown in the psychic of Yorubas which Yorubas later sold to other groups through Yoruba control of the media for decades.
3. Alhaji Tafawa Balewa , Nigeria ‘s first Prime minister could not tolerate Awolowo’s treacherous and inordinate ambition of acquiring political power by all means and at any cost. So, he threw Awolowo into prison for treason.
4. Samuel Ladoke Akintola who replaced Awolowo as Premier of Western Nigeria tried to destroy Awolowo’s political grip on Yorubaland by forming a party to takeover Western Nigeria in alliance with the Hausa-Fulani oligarch who Awolowo despised as a backward race. Consequently, Yorubaland went ablaze in revolt against Akintola’s plot. Law and order completely broke down in Western Nigeria. Wole Soyinka wore a mask and forced announcers at Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation to declare that Akintola’s government was a fraud.
5. Yet, Tafawa Balewa refused to declare state of emergency in Western Nigeria in order to keep Akintola as a proxy for Hausa-Fulani interest. This was the MAIN reason Yoruba graduates in the Army were the brains behind the coup led by Chukwuma Nzeogwu who happened to be Igbo.
6. As Wole Soyinka and even Obasanjo acknowledged, Nzeogwu ‘s coup was widely accepted by a vast majority of Nigerians across regional, religious and ethnic divides. But the dissatisfied Hausa-Fulani oligarchy who had majority in Nigerian Army infantry used their puppets, Yakubu Gowon, Theophilus Danjuma and co to overthrow General Ironsi.
7. In order to win support of Yorubas, Gowon released Awolowo from prison. The Hausa-Fulani knew Awolowo’s fear of Igbo as the only group that stood against his ambition to power. Gowon therefore quickly made a deal with Awolowo which in effect was that power would rotate between the North and the West (Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba) in post war Nigeria if Awolowo convinced Yorubas to join the North in fighting Igbos.
8. The Nigerian Army was consequently split into two divisions: the northern sector division commanded by Hausa-Fulani and the southern sector division, commanded by Yorubas.
9. Lagos, a city built largely by Igbos and were Igbos invested heavily, was also ceded to Yorubas as a State even when there was no Abuja at the time (1967). Awolowo was made Vice Chairman of Federal Executive Council and Finance Minister. All federal government owned banks in Nigeria at the time which included the Central Bank and First Bank, were under Awolowo and Yoruba management. It was a deal Awolowo could not resist. The man was an unscrupulous Machivellian anyway.
10. The Igbos were eventually defeated and Yorubas became champions of nationalism.
11. Awolowo tried to make sure no Igbo man or woman would ever be more than financial destitute let alone have the financial resources to rival a Yoruba
12. To achieve his objective of permanent Yoruba supremacy, Awolowo insisted that every bank account owned by an Igbo, regardless of how much was in it before the declaration of Biafra, would only be replaced with twenty pounds! He instructed Yoruba Permanent Secretaries who took over the Federal Civil service when Igbos left, to make sure that Igbo senior civil servants were not reinstated but to rather retire those who could not be dismissed as rebels. The same policy obtained in the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Police .
13. The Igbo were not only made pariahs but also financial destitutes.
14. Every house and industry in Igbo city was destroyed by war. Schools were closed for 3 years and many were razed to the ground.
15. Awolowo masterminded the indiginization policy by which Yorubas bought over all companies in Nigeria using money readily made available to them by the banks under their control. The Igbos were excluded.
16. They rejoiced and relaxed and complaisantly asked: “How could Igbos ever rear their ugly heads up again”? Sure, if that had happened to Yorubas or any other ethnic group, that would be their end. But as Awolowo rightly feared, we happen to be Ndi Igbo.
17. The shooting war ended 45 years ago and we are still here. We have survived all policy shenanigans contrapted by treacherous Yoruba masterminds and executed by their Hausa-Fulani allies.
18. In frustration, they have realized that we are who we are. Imagine their frustration! Never mind all Yoruba masterminded psychological attacks on Igbos disparaging us in any way they can.
19. Yes, Federal government policy has made them the tycoons of oil and gas, telecommunications, insurance and manufacturing. Oh, their Hausa-Fulani cum military allies gave Nigeria to Obasanjo for 8 years in keeping faith with their alliance.
20. Bola Tinubu is struggling for Awolowo mantle by forming an alliance of etho- religious jingoistic to ensure power keeps rotating between Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani. Where is the position of the Igbo and other tribes in Nigeria.
THAT IS WHY IGBOS WHO EXPERIENCE ALL THE ABOVE INJUSTICES THINK THAT BIAFRA IS THE ULTIMATE ANSWER.

HOWEVER, MY TAKE IS THAT THIS SHOULD MAKE OUR IGBO LEADERS FOCUSED, AND FIGHT FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF THEIR KINSMEN, NOT ONLY FOR THEIR OWN POCKETS. —

My Jewish alobam, I doubt Awolowo is in hell, but from the tone of your speech, there's no doubt you are already burning right here on earth. The devil wouldn't need to waste much firewood when you get to your final resting place. grin

The issue is not that they lie. The serious issue is that they actually believe their own lies. I read today, where one said that God instructed the albino braggart to start the movement. That's when i concluded that we will have a repeat of the Guyana tragedy in that region one of these days. Whenever the divine enters things like this, it never ends well

If una like take this case go heaven and back....the verdict go come back and say na Igbo coup.

When we ask yanminri why did Ibo kill Western leaders and Northern leaders but not a single Ibo leader died they go reply say na because Axikiwe no dey town dem for kill am, na because Ironsi could not be found dem for kill am, na because Okpara get guest dem for kill am.

I ask the mofos I say na the same bedroom Okpara and hin guest sleep? Why no go visit am for night like dem visit Pam at 3am,or Ademulegun at 3am, or Akintola at 3am, or Bello at 3am...? The lepers shut up and cant talk anymore..

OP,
Na pajapaja go kill ya foot! Why Okapara no die for 3am? Thats wjat we want hear. Ibo turned the future of this country upside down from day one...like Major General David Ejoor has rightly said.

In so much that the January 1966 military coup was mainly spear-headed by igbo officers,it still remains a pan-Nigerian coup. The involvement of northern officers like Capt.Gibson Jalo,Capt.Swanton,Lt.Pam Mandwok and 2nd.Lt.Artom Opera among many other unnamed northern conspirators tends to balance the multi-ethnic involvement. The involvement of Yoruba officers like Maj.Adewale Ademoyega,Cap.Adeleke,Lt.Fola Oyewole(with Maj.Nzeogwu in Kaduna),as well as Lt.Olafinmihan betray the lies being peddled that it was an all igbo affair.Even the FG deliberately failed to produce an all inclusive list of all the conspirators just because they want to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it.Otherwise, why were these northerners names not mentioned in the official gazetted list despite their confirmed involvement in the coup? Another funny dimension,in the course of their selective vendetta, the government also failed to include Midwest conspirators like 2Lt.Dag Warribo among others who even directly carried out the operations with Maj.Nzeogwu in Kaduna So no amount of distortion of history will ever conceal the truth.Lets embrace it as such.

All these lame attempts by the igbos to re write history is sickening..

One was even saying, Awolowo planned the coup from prison and that he instructed them to kill only yorubas and Northerners while igbos should be spared. .

A coup that killed the Northern and western premier but spared their eastern counterpart is Pan-Nigerian to you. .. Lol

Yes,. Major banjo, Major adewale ademoyega, Lt oyewole also fought on the side of Biafra during the Civil War, but it doesn't change the fact it was a war for the independence of biafra.

When you look at it from the angle of the ethnicity of people that were killed in the coup and the ethnicity of those that were spared, then having two or three yorubas partake in an Ibo dominated coup should mean nothing to you..

Though the entire event was tragic & regretable,we can but just inferred that all was precipitated by circumstances. That the afore yorubas fought on the side of Biafra against the Nigerian government showed how helpless they found theirselves.Me and you know we'll not have done otherwise if we're in their shoes.Lt.Col Victor Banjo was not a direct participant of the Jan.1966 coup but found himself implicated by circumstances & exiled away from home.He even approached Obasanjo then to appeal on his behalf to Gen.Gowon but he simply left him in the cold.Same thing happened to Lt.Fola Oyewole-author of "The Reluctant Rebel".He found himself imprisoned in the East when the Nigerian civil war broke out hence he simply fought on the side of Biafra. In so much that the Igbo's casualties of the coup were less, you can negate the principle that "all is fair in war".

I dont think awolowo said anything about ibo domination. What you people call domination was actually nepotism. Those that were worried about ibo's nepotism were:

1. Amhadu Bello. Google his interview with a british reporter where he expressed his hatred and disdain for the ibo people.
2. Akintola also despised ibos.

Aside the points above. Awo wrote a letter of appeal to Ironsi to release him from prison...Gowon only acted on his awos letter to ironsi.

Their efforts nonetheless, there were insinuations that Ironsi had become hostage to a secret set of advisers whosome alleged were mostly Igbo.

Among them were Francis Nwokedi, a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs; Pius Okigbo, who advised him on economic matters, and Lt. Col Patrick Anwunah.

Ironsi, on May 24, made a nationwide broadcast affirming the Unification Decree a move that quickly led to riots across many parts of Northern Nigeria. About the same time, despite a moratorium on promotions, the military announced the promotion of 25 military officers mostly of the ranks of Major and Lt. Cols. Of the 25, 19 were either Igbo or Midwesterners; five were from the North, and one was Yoruba.

Properly interrogated, the promotions were seen to be deserving to all, but it was believed to be another image disaster for the Ironsi regime as it portrayed the new regime as trying to consolidate on the Igbo gains from the January 15 coup.

I just love history.

One simple thing the kills us youths is we obstinately and passionately refuse to learn from house history, civil war and father's errors.

Of course it started with Nzeogu Kaduna and lead by Ojukwu. However, the coup revolution was supported by almost all the geo-zones, at least I read the account of Maj. Gen Alabi-Isama - "Tragedy of Victory". This man faulted so many yorubas and hausa-fulanis, but he had to fight to say Nigeria.

Major Ademoyega, Lt. Foyewole played a vital role in the coup.

Awolowo messed up, big time! He made Yorubas, a whole race, a slave to the caliphate.
I'm no Igbo, mind you, but a Yoruba friend of mine, who reads anything that has to do with Nigerian history, told me Awolowo was a mess. Another told me Igbo lost because there was only little foreign aid from France, I think.

If the igbos should leave, Nigeria would crawl.

I just imagine an ally of SW/SE/SS. Our problems don solve be dat. But would they allow this? I mean they....The queen, amelica and their interests.

Awo lived longer than Ojukwu though.

grin grin grin

Guy no be buy how long, na buy how well you live your life..Jesus ad other great men no live long..Weder you believe it or not awo is burning in hell for his wickedness ad atrocities.

Honestly, these flattinoes are simply sickening with their barefaced lies and propaganda.
How i wish Obasanjo can take this libellous fellow to court.
None of the major coup plotters, including the igbos, who have authored books on the incident ever mentioned all these sudden inclusions.
Don't these people have any decency and dignity at all.
They better go all out to get their biafra because they have declared themselves persona-non-grata in the north and SW already. Nor should they ever hope for nigeria's presidency.
Chinua Achebe's book, "Things Fall Apart" have come home to roost for his people in a nation called Nigeria. Cursed be that yoruba person who goes or does anything against biafra actualization.

Olusegun Obasanjo.

"Let the truth be told. The People involved in that so called 1966 “Igbo coup” were:
✴1. Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu (Midwest Region Igbo)

✴3. Capt. G. Adeleke (Western Region – Yoruba).

Egbon, check out the interview Major Nzeogwu granted after the coup;

Ejindu: It has been said that Gen. Ironsi set out to complete your job for you. Was there anything you did not like in his administration ?

Nzeogwu: Yes, everything. First he chose the wrong advisers for the work he halfheartedly set out to do. Most of them were either mediocre or absolutely unintelligent. Secondly, he was tribalistic in the appointment of his governors. Thirdly the Decree 34 (which nullified the federal constitution and established a unitary government) was unnecessary, even silly. In fact . . .

Ejindu: But you wanted a unitary government ?

Nzeogwu: No. Not a unitary government as such. We wanted to see a strong centre. We wanted to cut the country to small pieces, making the centre inevitably strong. We did not want to toy with power, which was what he did.

Ejindu: Tell me, what do you think of him as a soldier?

Nzeogwu: I am afraid I cannot tell you that. But I will say that as a person he was very well liked and as the Supreme Commander, his orders were promptly carried out.
