SPIRIT OF OF MAMMON

-SUMMARY

When we talk about mammon, we must
examine its influence in the spiritual realm.
Although we cannot see this realm with our
physical eyes, it is as real as the natural world
in which we live. The spirit of mammon
attaches itself to money, and if we are not
careful, we can fall under its subtle influence.
Its goal is to exert demonic influence in the
area of our finances. It tries to trick us into
trusting money more than God by slightly
twisting the truth of his word just enough to
confuse us. We are susceptible to this type of
trickery if we do not know the word of God well
enough to see through mammon’s lies.
Demonic influence always takes advantage of
ignorant Christians, which is why it is so
important for us to acquire biblical knowledge
and stay strong against attacks in this area.
A. Mammon attaches itself to money, but
also to our attitudes.

1. It may seem strange to us to talk about
spirits, but the spiritual world is real.
a. We are spiritual beings possessing
souls and living in physical bodies.
b. God is also a spirit (John 4:24), and
all physical things are the result of
spiritual things.
c. We must understand the influences
that come from the spiritual realm,
in order to understand the word of
God. The word is life (John 6:63).

2. He who is faithful in that which is least
is faithful also in much, and he who is
unjust in the least is also unjust in
much. If therefore you have not been
faithful in unrighteous mammon, who
will commit to your trust the true
riches? And if you have not been
faithful in that which is another man’s,
who will give you that which is your
own? No servant can serve two
masters. Either he will hate the one and
love the other, or else he will hold to the
one and despise the other. You cannot
serve God and mammon (Luke
16:10-13).
a. Jesus was explaining that the least
use of our faith in the kingdom of
God is in the area of money.
b. The “much” refers to all the things
that have been made available to us
by God’s grace.
c. Faith and trust go together. Our
willingness to give is an indication
of our level of trust. This was
illustrated by Jesus’ observation of
the widow who cast two mites into
the treasury (Mark 12:41-44).
d. The question we must answer for
ourselves is whether the Spirit of
God or the spirit of mammon is
motivating us concerning finances.

3. The spirit of mammon extends even
farther than money. It wants to exert an
evil influence, but the Spirit of God
wants to exert a godly influence.
a. We see this godly influence on
Simon Peter when Jesus asked Peter
who people said he was (Matthew
16:13-18). Right after this exchange,
we see mammon’s influence when
Peter rebuked Jesus (Matthew
16:21-23).
b. When Peter verbally opposed what
Jesus revealed, what Peter said
sounded good, but it was not God’s
will.
c. In our lives, we will hear things that
sound godly, but they will not line up
with the Scriptures. There is no way
of knowing truth from lies until we
get into the word and truly know God
(Psalm 46:10).
B. Mammon can have demonic influence
over money.

1. For we do not wrestle against flesh and
blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places (Ephesians
6:12).
a. The spirit of mammon is one of
these wicked spirits in high places.
b. The major power that demons carry
is the power of suggestion. We fight
against their influence by standing
on what we know from God’s word
and renewing our minds.
c. We fight spiritual warfare by
maintaining the victory that Jesus
died to obtain for us.
d. The devil will be defeated and leave
us when we stand on the word of
God just the way Jesus did when he
was tempted in the wilderness
(Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13).
e. We must remember who we are in
Christ. Demons know when we are
secure in our identity in Jesus. The
story of the seven sons of Sceva
illustrates this (Acts 19:13-16).

2. The love of money is the root of all evil,
which while some coveted after, they
have erred from the faith, and pierced
themselves through with many sorrows
(1 Timothy 6:10).
a. Love is a relational word. “Love of
money” actually describes a wrong
relationship with it. Mammon
promotes this type of relationship.

3. Where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also (Matthew 6:21).
a. If we want to find where our hearts
are and what we really love, we must
examine our relationship with
money. Looking at how we spend
our time and money tells us.
Sometimes our hearts are not with
God.
C. There are three spiritual cousins to
mammon.

1. The spirit of pride.
a. Pride does not acknowledge God for
his blessings. In this way, it goes
against the word (Proverbs 3:6).
b. This spirit kills our ability to obey
God. Pride was the spirit that caused
the fall of Lucifer.
c. It causes us to turn away from God
and seek our own self-satisfaction,
thereby making us into our own god.
d. Pride is a lie, so when live a prideful
life, we live a lie. Pride causes us to
compare ourselves to others (2
Corinthians 10:12).

2. The spirit of greed.
a. We do not need money to be greedy.
It is okay to have possessions, as
long as they do not have us.
b. God says to give and bless others,
but greed causes us to hold on to
everything we have and seek even
more.

3. The spirit of poverty.
a. This spirit causes us to be ashamed
of God’s blessings, and it puts us in
a state of constant want.
b. God is able to make all grace
abound toward us, so that, always
having all sufficiency in everything,
we may abound in every good work
(2 Corinthians 9:8 ). The spirit of
poverty does not want this to happen
in our lives.
