We've been hearing of different cases of insecurity from Ikorodu - kidnappings, ritual murders, & cultism, etc. The hottest one currently being the activities of the dreaded badoo gang, which we hear sell the handkerchief stained with their victim's blood for as much as N500,000.


Ikorodu is so large: from Owode-Ajegunle, Agric-Ishawo, Imota, Ijede, Igbogbo, to the odogunyan ends & considering the geographical location of Ikorodu ie being an 'outskirt' & @ d edge of the state, only the people living there have been the ones around, & for that reason, over the years, criminals from other areas have seen it as a safe haven and have come to settle there. The cultists, ritualists, armed robbers, etc also had another means of livelihood, which was oil bunkering. Due to the recent crackdown on their activities around Ishawo & other areas by the government, they'v switched into kidnapping & ritual killings so as to maintain their lifestyles.


This issue of insecurity can be resolved in the following ways:


1. OPEN UP IKORODU

The government shld further make ikorodu open so as to allow people from other areas to come in. Set up industries, eg revive the port, build the 4th mainland bridge, even agricultural schemes to harness the fertile vegetations of the area. This will further reduce unemployment as so many trained, & unskilled individuals/artisans wld have a means of livelihood,


2. BRING IN MORE SECURITY UNITS


The size and population of Ikorodu currently exceeds the available security/ police units. The state and federal government should establish more Police, Army, Naval bases around.


3. ALL CULT ACTIVITIES SHOULD BE BANNED!


Before we got to this stage, we've been hearing of killings by rival cults. These cultists have been in control of oil bunkering & backed by influential people in the society. I believe its the same set of people that have upgraded to Badoos, killing innocent people. All oro activities shld also be banned because ikorodu has been synonymous with oro. If oro is an effective way of cleansing the city, how come all these killings came up? Why shld the people's movement be restricted because of a traditional rite? The government need to phase out this primitive lifestyle. The Oro cult is also attracting other activities of cultism to Ikorodu.

I agree with opening up Ikorodu, the place is too darn large and we could definitely make use of another port. The quickest way is to weaken traditional institutions there. Unlike other Local Govts in Lagos, Ikorodu's Obas and Princes have too much influence and this translates into reliance on vigilantes and cult groups for security. The same people guarding the streets are the same ones committing these crimes, this is not news.
