Have you ever felt so lost before, you don’t know how to find yourself? I know this is a rhetorical question but it is also a question that is begging for answers. Answers in the sense that it would point out a new path and a new dimension in the coming days. Finding yourself has a lot to do about focus and focus doesn’t come with staring intently. It comes with a prepared state of mind backed up with a memorandum already prepared on the subject or mission about to be embarked upon.

Once upon a time, leadership naturally passed down in a hierarchical manner. A father hands the baton of leadership to his son who hands it over to his own son with the cycle continuing. This brought about a pattern that doesn’t allow progressive spontaneity to be achieved. There is always a backlog of things that should have been done that isn’t done or there tends to be a craving to outdo the predecessor in a unique way that may not favour the masses. Reminds us of the story of the son of King Solomon in the Christian Holy Book. Wanting to outdo his father, he sought the advice of his mates who advised him thus:

“Tell them that your little finger is thicker than your father’s waist and if he had whipped them with whip, you will do same with scorpions.”

This made the children of Israel to break away from the kingdom, rendering the kingdom into two. The divide was created making it easier for enemies to come capture both kingdoms separately, taking them into captivity. None of the above entities offered help to the other during the period of any war except in rare cases.

I am not here to discuss the Bible though but to point out something of incredible importance. Leaders these days are made. A wise man once said: “Talent alone can get you there but it takes hard work to keep you there and propel you to greater heights.”

Comrade Gbedozin Akonasu aka Mwalimu is a leader who has striven against every obstacle and has emerged one whose capacity in deciding and piloting the affairs of any organization is unmatched. Blessed with a passion to lend a hand to those who need it the most, he has distinguished himself in all ramifications, right from the classroom down to the hallowed chambers of the Senate. He is like the proverbial voice in the wilderness but unlike the proverbial voice, he is not making the way for someone greater, no, he is paving a path on which he himself would travel before passing the baton to the next qualified person.

The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has long been in a state of decadence and negligence that it would take only a vibrant leader with vision to change the story and return the Association to its former glory. A leader who would give voice to the association and seat it amongst it equals on an elevated podium. Like the Seat of the Caliphate, Sokoto State, is consulted before major decisions is taken when it comes to Islamic matters in the country, so also would NAUS be consulted in the coming days. This can only be possible though if the helms of leadership is mounted by the right person.

Comr. Akonasu has for long has this age long dream of repositioning, rebuilding and revitalizing the Association for a greater efficiency. This is a mission that cannot be embarked on alone. Even though the road to victory has been mapped out already, he would need help from likeminded individuals and comrades to take the Association to its permanent site. And to achieve that, he would need to be where the decision is being made so that he can apply and impart what he has buried deep inside of him for the benefit of the Association and all Nigerian University Students. As we know, a single tree cannot make a forest neither is it only the iroko tree that provide the shades in the forest. Other trees grown together in the forest and working as an umbrella helps in this aspect. That is to say, Comr. Akonasu cannot do this on his own. He would need the help and support of everyone who is tired of the status quo and would like to see the Association soaring high there with the eagles where it rightly belongs.

Let’s join hands together and make this dream a reality.
