A 4s system voltage of 16.8v will be too much for my inverter, can still manage a voltage range of 12.4v to 10.0v for the 3s system

That's ok. I was thinking LIFEPO4, I see it is Lion, 4.2v

Good Morning House,

I recently decided to start my solar journey after the incessant grid collapses, rising cost of fuel & intermittent power supply across the country. I have always been the kind of person to research any new area of interest extensively before comitting my hard earned money to it. So, I had been googling around solar forums & different manufacturers website before finally stumbling across this extensive thread. Brethren, I started this thread from page 1 a month ago and to God be the glory I have now caught up grin. I hope to be a contributing member of the thread and share my solar journey with you all. With that said, I will be buying my equipment small and hope to build my solar system to a relatively stable status.Thank you all for your wonderful contributions so far.

If you must do Lead-acid battery of higher capacity(500 ah and above, even from 400ah), just use 2v.

HOWEVER,

After fantasizing and dreaming, the drone of your neighbors generator and realities of life hits your wallet and you everyday and your thoughts start coming down to earth gradually. It has always been a great advice on this forum to start the solar journey with small steps and add more equipment as your knowledge and needs progress more. In that spirit, I had made another list of equipment to which I am creating a budget for possibly by end of the year to purchase and start my emancipation from the evil clutches of the Grid.

Current Realities:

Solar Panels:
1. Yingli Solar Panels 380w x 12 = 4,560w N65,000 per panel

Solar Charge Controller:
1. Fangpusun Flexmax MPPT80A $290

Inverter:
1. Fangpusun XTM Inverter 4800W-48V $792
2. SRNE All-in-one solar charge inverter HT4850S80-145 N350,000

Battery Monitor:
1.Fangpusun BSP-500 Battery Condition Monitor with 500A Shunt $80

Battery:
1. Fullriver 12V - DC260 (4pieces) N205,000

I am still tinkering with the list and balancing between quality & price. But we all have to start somewhere.

I intend to have a 48v setup and was looking at the quanties of batteries needed to reach that. My little research that I did showed that a large number of people recommend 6v batteries as the most ideal instead of 12v which is most common here. I did come across the Full River FSG Solar Gel Batteries in 2v. I saw one FSG 2v 1000ah for N175,000. But I will need 24 of those to build a battery bank to support 48v. I was thinking of going Lithium by the time I reach that point. If I get a good lead acid battery bank now that can last 5years, by the time I am ready to change with the rapid changes going in Lithium, it might be more affordable then and technology more mature. But please enlighten more on why 2v batteries is better going from 400ah and above. Thank you. smiley

i doubt if u will get it at that price now or when u are eventually ready.

Solar Charge Controller:

2. SRNE All-in-one solar charge inverter HT4850S80-145 N350,000

why not save your self the stress and flow with new reality. get a 5kw deye hybrid inverter. it is cost effective and better than those combinations (especially that less efficient SRNE). and yes u can order a deye 5kw hybrid for around 410 to 450k smiley

lead acid is fading out cheesy, lithium is the present/future, with atleast 3000 cycles. since u are planning towards the yr end, why not order 16pcs of 230ah lithium cells @ around 430 to 500k (exchange rate dependent) now, and it would have arrived by year end.

I am trying to come up with an automation design, perhaps you can advice or suggest.

The workflow will be something like this.

From 10am, whether or not there is Utility, switch loads to inverter, as long as the battery is full. (I am hoping the battery state can be gotten from the charge controller because it has a comms port, CC type is Epever)
otherwise stay on utility and check again every hour
At 4:30 pm, change over to Utility.

Anyone with a way to achieve this? I think these R3 are located to specific loads, right?

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Barezzi(m): 5:00pm On Jul 07, 2021
I assume all your loads are on the inverter output.
I also assume your inverter switches to "pass thru" mode when connected to the grid.

Install a suitably rated 2NC contactor on the Grid supply to the inverter.
Install a timer switch and a victron bmv700 battery monitor in series with the coil of the contactor above.
Set timer "on" time to 10am and "off" time to 4.30pm.
Set bmv700 SOC "on" to 100%(battery full) and "off" to 80%(or any level between 50% and 100% that suits your fancy)

Grid > 2NC Contactor > Inverter > Loads

Both conditions above must be met for the contactor to energize and disconnect the grid supply to your inverter.
If before 4.30pm the battery level drops below 80%, the contactor will de-energize and restore grid supply(if available) to your inverter.

A 2NC contactor is used to eliminate vampire current draw by the contactor at night when there's no solar.

Alternatively, install a 2NO contactor on the output of the inverter if your loads are not normally on inverter e.g Aircon, fridges etc
Hook up a suitably rated ATS downstream of the contactor.

Inverter > 2NO Contactor > ATS < Grid

Connect your loads to the ATS.
The contactor will allow or deny inverter supply thru the ATS to your loads based on time of day and battery SOC, else they remain on the grid.

It's quite huge,

I have being having a thorough thought on

1. Balancing capability of the Daly series
2. Getting a Rs485/CAN comm via some work around to talk to inverter
3. Also ability to tweak the SOC to do local switching of loads et cetera.

If after my research the above fail to meet requirements then the expensive batrium with active community and CAN work around could be considered

But to the Daly as a balancing compliment a Deligreen 1s balancer would be a cheap way to save cost

All is a thought in process, taking it one step at a time

In order to be sure of my budget, I wish to ask:
If I charge my batteries ( bank of 48v 920Ah) using solar panels ( 24v 2560w ), 3.5kva inverter with 60A CC and at the same time using my appliances of about 600w,
is it possible to get production of 54v display on cc with the peak of sun?

If yes, how many hours precisely?

If no due to appliances usage while charging, what could be done to store current in the batteries for night usage while I'm still making used of the day output from the panels?

Night consumption is 400w.

Thank you sir for the detailed response. Always glad to learn something new everyday. You know there is this ongoing debate between having an independent solar charge controller (which I am more in favour of) vs having an inverter with a built in charge controller like the Deye. I think the system is better off with a specialised charge controller than risk the issue of failure with a built charger in an inverter. That said, I am on the lookout for a good, quality Chinese inverter that will last me atleast 5 years before I port over to the victrons & outbacks. SRNe, Growatt, Fangpusun etc are amongst the brands I am currently looking at. 5000w 48v preferably. I want to do lead acid for now to enable the lithium technology to mature more before taking the plunge. But we will be getting to that leg of the journey soon too.

Thanks for your input earlier, the watt meter worked and came back to live but I am afriad it has had it.

Voltage reading was 529Vac Amp 31.23
Of 3.20

Flicking the board over noticed it was toast completely ... Something is broken, and since PCB is charred I will get another.

Attached is a picture of the charred Pcb

Example mine is 3-4KWh, All I need to do is generate 5kwh and above on a daily basis..

The technology is over mature, getting old self! It is just the entering price point for us here in Nigeria, that is the problem.

You can start with Fangpusun, contact JUO for the inverter, I think he still has one for sale.
