Look at this authoritative report on the extent of the Sokoto caliphate and how central slavery was to the the Caliphate. Sokoto Caliphate was just as aggresive as slaveholder in the 1800s as was the United States. Arguably, Sokoto caliphate had a larger slave population expanding west from Sokoto to Burkina Faso, west to Cameroon and as far south as Oyo. Has the Fulani aristocracy disavowed slavery? It is not suprising that polio and illiteracy are only endemic in Northern Nigeria.
