As loud as Rauf Aregbesola wanted to be on the campaign trail for the Osun West Senatorial elections, he really should not have gone the route of personal attacks on members of the Adeleke family.

Dr Deji Adeleke, one of the younger brothers to the deceased Senator Isiaka Adeleke and father of pop star Davido, was a particular target. Aregbesola insinuated that Davido’s father could be suffering from Isiaka’s demise, leading him to be “mad”.

There was the prompt but responsible response from the Adelekes, rebuking the Governor for condescending to the level of mocking their dead as a political tool. Though not averse to airing an opinion on political figures (like he did with Dele Momodu) Davido did not use his popular platform to strike back at Ogbeni Rauf; he was probably too engrossed with the diss with Wizkid to even bother.

But ultimately, he didn’t have to: banana has fallen on Aregbesola, or the other way round. In any case, the Governor has slipped massively and it may take sometime to get the juice off under his sole
Ademola Adeleke, in his victory speech, sees his victory as a propeller “to make sure that next year we overcome and victory shall be ours. My victory is a new dawn in the history of our democracy. We want to make sure there is nothing like rigging anymore no matter how you try, we want our democracy to grow”.

Adeleke pledges to continue the legacy of his brother, but the new Senator’s successful break with the APC in Osun West could represent the reference point for a fault line in the party’s structure that can be exploited in elections elsewhere.

PDP’s leadership crisis has been well documented. Both the Makarfi and Sheriff factions are celebrating and taking credit for Adeleke’s success. For the APC, it is a signal to build proper structures to fix its own administrative problems that have not often been in the news as a full crisis but, when scrutinised, isn’t much better than the PDPs.

Successful defections of Adelekes calibre initiated the beginning of the end of PDP’s national domination. While its no secret that both parties are basically two sides of the sane coin, it will be in the APC’s interest to prove that they are not vulnerable to falling like a pack of cards.
