According to European Union (EU) floods directive defines flood as a covering by land not normally covered by water.
In the last few days, we have experienced flood in Nigeria like we have never experienced before... The most notable locations are Ikoyi, Lekki, Ajah, Victoria island and Suleja in the Northern region of the country.
Please, disregard the rumours that God sent the flood because the locations are the new Sodom and Gomorrah as these are only technical issues grin
Just as the impact of floods worldwide, we witnessed the loss of lives (man & animals), damage of properties (buildings, cars etc) and people dislodged temporarily from their homes which is quite sad. embarassed
The aftereffect is not just physical but emotional as people have lost families, friends and means of livelihood. lipsrsealed
So what happens next?
In as much as I will give solutions to those affected, I'm sorry to say that there's nothing we can do about the lives that were lost except the giving of our prayers that they rest on peacefully...
To prevent a future occurrence of the loss we have suffered in the flood, the government have the major part to play
It should set up a team of professionals to examine the damage, find out the causes and proffer solution. (It may not be just the drainage as suspected)
People with vehicles which were submerged shouldn't start their cars without the assistance of a mechanic... This may be quite expensive and possibly much more than the vehicle's worth because the mechanic may be required to disassemble the car to effect repairs (I can recommend good mechanical engineers)
To the owners of buildings and estates, it is highly necessary to conduct a building survey to know the damage the building may have suffered before effecting repairs.
This is to prevent future casualties that may be a result of the flood.
It is good to know that just as diseases may be found in a healthy looking patient by a doctor, so can defects be found in a building by a construction professional.
