1.When thinking of protective hairstyles, faux locs are a great option especially if you want to DIY (do it yourself.

2. Depending on the texture you prefer, faux locs can be done with Marley hair (lasts longer), kanekalon (a cheaper option, wool (yarn), faux locs hair, Cuban twist hair and so on.

3. The hair must be wrapped around tightly to get the “loc” effect.

4. If you choose to burn the tips of the locs (which helps the locs to stay in place), then don’t deep them in hot water. Opt for using steam to relieve the stiff look and feel of the hair.

5. Don’t “loc” the hair too close to your hair roots so it’s not too tight and cause you discomfort like headaches, dizziness or a sore scalp.

6. Massage your scalp regularly with olive or coconut oil to help relieve an itchy scalp and also help stimulate growth.

7.You can clean your scalp regularly while you have the locs with a washcloth or cotton wool and methylated spirit or apple cider vinegar.

8. Don’t carry the locs for too long so your hair doesn’t begin to loc. An average of 2months is okay to carry your hairstyle.

9. If you burned the ends of your locs they are likely to pick or pull on fabric like wool, lace or velcro, no you need to be careful how you carry your hair.

10. When you are ready to remove the locs, simply cut off the burned ends and untwist. If you used faux loc hair and didn’t burn the hair, just simply untwist it.
