Enugu State govern­ment would spend about N30 million on scholarship awards to 300 second-year students of in­stitutions of higher learning for the 2017/2018 academ­ic session, Commissioner for Information, Godwin Udeuhele has disclosed.

Udeuhele explained that the chosen 300 students out of about 2,704 candidates shortlisted for a written in­terview by the Enugu State Scholarship Board would receive N100,000 for the ac­ademic session.

He further disclosed that the beneficiaries were drawn from the three sena­torial districts of the state. The beneficiaries, he said, consisted of students study­ing Science and Technology, Medical Sciences, Environ­mental Sciences, Mathemat­ics, Agricultural Scienc­es and Special Education courses.

According to him, the scholarship programme was a gesture designed by the government to relieve par­ents of the financial burden in training their wards.

The information commis­sioner explained that only 300 students were chosen from about 2,704 candidates shortlisted for a written in­terview for the scholarship following an advertisement by the Enugu State Scholar­ship Board.

Also speaking, Prof. Uche Eze, the Commissioner for Education remarked that the scholarship was in line with the vision of the state gover­nor of encouraging youth to acquire education. He said physically challenged stu­dents were given special consideration in the selec­tion process, irrespective of their zones.

“In selecting the bene­ficiaries, candidates were tested in English Language, Mathematics and current affairs with a cut-off mark of 40 points. All those with one form of disability or the other that took the test were selected,’’ he said.
