Uniben Pro-chancellor Laments Erosion Threat by snowdrops(m): 7:05pm On Feb 03, 2010
BENIN CITY - The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the university of Benin, Sir Gabriel T.G. Toby has lamented the threat to lives and university structures by the massive gully erosion at the Ugbowo Campus of the university.


Sir. Toby was reacting during an inspection and assessment visit to the erosion site by the Governing Council of the university.


A statement by the Head, Public Relations and Protocol, Richmond Omagbemi, the gully erosion which has eaten up a large expanse of the university land has been reported to have encroached by as much as 25 metres per annum.


According to the statement the gully is now about 500 metres wide and about 10 kilometres long.
The Pro-Chancellor in the statement called on the Federal Government, the Edo State government and the Ecological Disaster Relief Fund to assist the University of Benin in arresting the erosion which has already claimed the university fence and some houses.
