Ethno-religious crisis: OPC advocates secession by Yoruba

Written by Olalekan Olabulo

The Yoruba sociocultural organisa-tion, the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), has called for secession of the Yoruba race from Nigeria, following the unabated killings of the Yoruba in northern Nigeria.

This was contained in a press statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune, on Tuesday, and signed by the national coordinator of the congress, Chief Gani Adams.

The OPC, in the press statement, claimed that “the incessant killings of the Yoruba people in the North, in the name of religious or sectarian killings in Maiduguri , Kano, Sokoto, Bauchi and Jos, gives cause for concern" and therefore called for secession.

"We therefore call for a Yoruba nation, since our people are not safe in a section of the country, while we call ourselves a nation. And while our people are currently suffering under the yoke of economic mismanagement by government as manifested in high food prices, lack of fuel for domestic and commercial uses, the unprovoked killings of our people is the last straw," the statement added.

The organisation further claimed that “ in fact, with the level of casualty in the recent killings in Jos and other northern states, we have cause to believe that there is still more to come. This is because for over 10 years, no single individual has been tried or convicted for the ruthless massacre of our people.”
