Don’t Suspend Ceasefire, Rep Urges Mend by Nobody: 7:07am On Feb 04, 2010 |
UGHELLI—THE member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Solomon Ahwinawhi, has appealed to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) not to go back to the creeks in the interest of peace and development of the region. Ahwinawhi, who made the appeal in a telephone chat with Vanguard yesterday, said the moves by MEND to go back to the creeks as widely reported in the papers were not in the best interest of the region and the Nigerian state. He said upholding its earlier ceasefire decision and keeping faith with the federal government ’s amnesty programme would do the region and its citizenry a lot of good, adding that going back to the creeks would take the region back in all spheres of life. According to him, “what the region needs at this time is unity of purpose. We need to be united and peaceful in our quest for greater and sustainable development of the area. In the National Assembly, we are not relenting in our efforts to draw government ’s continued attention to the oil-rich region.” “I must commend our youths for their decision to embrace the amnesty package and also urge them to sustain their decision to embrace the programme. Government is committed to it and will do every to ensure its success in entirety. ” Ahwinawhi expressed his readiness to give his constituents adequate representation in the National Assembly, pointing out that he was committed to their well being. He promised to continue in his effort to empower both the youths and women, adding that it was his desire to see all his constituents self-sufficient and economically independent. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/02/04/don’t-suspend-ceasefire-rep-urges-mend/ |
