Kobo is a technology company launched in 2016 with the purpose of adding value to Nigerian industries. The company began beta operations working with businesses in the FMCG space to effectively manage their logistics. In less than a year of operations, the company generated ₦979 million in revenue using its proprietary artificial intelligence – HEDGELogistics, to reduce costs for customers while driving efficiency in the logistics operations of its partners, such as Chisco.

To further the exchange of knowledge among logistics professionals regarding the value that technology can add to their companies’ operations, Kobo is proud to announce that it will be hosting the first ever Logistics Professionals Conference, with the theme – Leveraging Technology to Increase Profits in Logistics.

Regarding the company’s move to host this conference, CEO and Co-Founder, Obi Ozor remarked;

“The challenges facing the logistics industry affect all industries in Africa. The lack of efficiency and key infrastructure in logistics is leading to higher cost of operations, downsizing and in some cases, company shutdown. With this conference, we want successful logistics professionals to share their insights with fellow professionals. At Kobo, we believe that by 2020 logistics in Africa will operate at the same level of efficiency as the European and US logistics sectors.”

The user enters travel details, selects preferred bus, then make payment. After payment has been confirmed, the user would receive an email with the bus ticket.

Clearly, online reservation and booking for buses is a highly competitive space. Ebere made this obvious when he said: “Competition already exists in the market”. However, listing Gigm.com, Bus.com.ng, emytrip.com.ng, and a couple of other players, he believes BookBus has an edge with its flexible pricing option, and fast booking services.

BookBus also provides tours to fun places and a direct transit to NYSC camps. The latter especially helps to eliminate the stressful queues corp members face in the bid to obtain travel tickets. Summing up these features, the founder feels confident to play in the highly saturated space.

Just as the name hints, EventPlanner is an online marketplace that connects users to a range of event vendors in Nigeria. Basically, it allows for planning and managing of events from start to finish.

Vendors such as makeup artists, photographers, caterers, DJs, MC/Compere, decorators, videographers etc, are listed on the platform, with their locations, and charges. With this, users select their preferred service providers.
The words of the founder goes a long way to define their essence:

We put the power of an event planner in your pocket. We make it easy for you to find all the vendors you need, book them, pay them, and manage every aspect of your wedding or event – from anywhere. No matter the event you are planning; be it weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, corporate dinners, corporate retreats, corporate parties/launching, we work hard to make planning your events fun and easy.

According to the founder, Amaka Epoh, their mission is to give event vendors an online visibility and to create the easiest and cheapest way for customers to book event-related services.

The platform aims to solve three problems — the stress of sourcing for auto parts under the scorching sun, the uncertainty of getting genuine ones and the likelihood of buying them at exorbitant prices.

Although Ikokuonline’s primary market is Port Harcourt, they also have eyes set on the whole of Nigeria. The team comprises of founders, Emmanuel Ugochukwu and Fortune Bekee — who are both in charge of IT, product, sales and logistics respectively — and Valentine Ogechi, who oversees customer care & admin.

Since launch, the startup claims to have matched its reputation by activating over 35+ sales, about $1000 in revenue and a customer base above 40. Also, the startup has partnered with major insurance and logistics companies in Port Harcourt to deliver efficient service.

The founders are quick to acknowledge offline auto parts sellers as competition. They are however banking on simplicity, efficient customer service and possible offering of the best price as a competitive edge

Following the spike in foreign exchange rate, new smartphones on leading online stores have become quite expensive. According to Ndukewe Ogechi (founder UKUsedPhones), many people now prefer to opt for “UK-used” models because they are cheaper and still offer the same value.

However, there is a challenge to this supposed alternative. 6 out of 10 “UK used phones” may be fake or faulty. Hence, Ogechi was prompted to launch UKUsedPhones — an eCommerce platform strictly dedicated to sales of fairly used phones from the UK — on September 1, 2015.

While UKUsedPhones allows users to purchase used smartphones, it also gives vendors the opportunity to sell on the platform. However, sellers go through a verification process to establish their credibility. The founder emphasises that they are screened manually and their shop addresses (preferably in the Computer Village) are physically verified.

They must have an internal phone engineer to ensure that all phones listed on our classified market are working. This is what has helped us remain in business for 2 years. We have facilitated the sale of over 10,000 units of UK Used phones with support.

According to the founder, the process ensures that used phones are listed on the site from genuine sellers only. Asides this, customers can walk into the sellers’ stores for after-sales support or product swap.

MIT graduate student Chidube Ezeozue is a first class electrical engineering graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is currently pursuing dual master’s degrees in MIT’s Technology and Policy Program and in electrical engineering and computer science.

Frustrated by his nation’s erratic electrical grid, Chidube created an app, with his brother, that crowdsources information about Nigerian power outages. With the app, called NepaSituation, people living in Nigeria can report outages. This data, when merged into an algorithm developed by Ezeozue, can help Nigerians predict when power outages may strike their neighborhoods, and how long those outages might last.

After graduating from MIT in June, Ezeozue will remain in Cambridge, working as a software engineer for Google.

We are talking of innovators, people are talking of gamblers and fraudsters...

Justus Nwaoga is among ten 2013 African innovators who were nominated for developing practical solutions to some of the continent’s most intractable problems. They were chosen from more than 900 applications from 45 countries. The finalists for the Innovation Prize for Africa, IPA, 2013 provided practical examples of Africa’s investment potentials.

Nwaoga was nominated for developing a new way to collect renewable solar energy by using the mimosa pudica weed, an organic African medicinal plant. With this breakthrough, it was possible to construct a functional mimosa solar panel with the Mimosa plant extract. The solar panel is designed in such a way that the electrical potential of the cells can be restored on exposure to direct sun rays, after they have been discharged.

The Innovation Prize for Africa is an award founded by the African Innovation Foundation and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. It mobilises African innovators and entrepreneurs by providing a total of $150 000 to winners who deliver market-oriented solutions for African-led development. The prize encourages private equity investors, government and development leaders to invest across sectors and build a climate that fuels Africa’s economic growth.

Nwaogu is with the Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Spotting the disconnect between online shoppers and retailers — which has birthed issues of distrust in the eCommerce turf in Nigeria - Ibe Kingsley launched a customer-driven online retail solution.

Priceslash, as it is named, is an online retail company that focuses on creating value for customers by providing them access to low prices on desired products.
Profit making is no doubt the underlying objective of most businesses. While acknowledging the importance of sales, the founders of Priceslash believe the absence of customer satisfaction does not guarantee a successful business model. This then begs the question of how Priceslash is able to create value while delivering low prices.

This is made possible by having a significant number of partners as local manufacturers and SMLRs (Small Medium and Large Retailers) who deal primarily in locally-sourced and produced items.

According to the founder, “All the products go through a rigorous process of quality control to ensure that the final product delivered to the customer meets or even exceeds their expectations.”

In addition to the above, they also provide an all-round clock customer support, as well as a 48-hour money back guarantee on defective items.

Since launching on the 20th of March 2017, Priceslash claims to have made significant sales which proves the validity of the business model.

TourArch is a platform that allows tourists to find choice tour locations around Nigeria.

The idea was conceived in late 2015, somewhere in South-Eastern Nigeria, by a handful of entrepreneurs (Ezeibekwe Ogechukwu Kingsley Founder/CEO, Afolayan Adeleke, Co-Founder/COO, Ejekam Chioma, Head of Media) who are looking to raise the profile of tourism in Nigeria.

The team has ambitions to expand TourArch, beyond the borders of West Africa, to the African continent and around the world in due time.

“It’s a dream we have begun looking to actualise,” Ezeibekwe affirms, “We’ve been to these awesome places and put up descriptions based on our experiences. That way, we give you a mental picture of what it’s like there and offer you the best preparation for a trip.”

Not limited to just listing tour locations, TourArch also hooks potential tourists up with cool tour operators — guides if you would. The platform currently lists about eight tour operators and ten tour locations.

For all it seems, TourArch might be playing in an uncharted terrain. According to the CEO, “We don’t really have direct competitors. There is no platform which currently offers the services we do.”

He is however quick to highlight tour operators as their indirect competitors. A possible collaboration with these supposed competitors may just pave way for the platform to own the market completely.

If you would love to find out interesting things about places you would love to visit, TourArch’s website is a good resource

Launched by Clinton Nwadiukor, Cube is a hub for designers and lovers of art to showcase their artwork to the world and increase their chances of getting hired.

The platform is host to various designers in major design categories such as pencil sketches, cartoons, illustrations, 3D models, architecture, web design, paints, concepts and branding.
How it works

Designers upload their work and users can like and comment on them. Both users and designers get notified via email when someone else comments on their thread.

Cube also gives employers the opportunity to access great talent on a global scale. Employers looking to hire a designer can search by entering a location they want to hire from. They go through designer’s portfolio and contact them on the platform. This is intended to reduce the cost and time taken to hire a designer.

There is also a store for comic book artists where they are able to sell their works directly and make some money for themselves.

The creativity industry in Nigeria is evidently on the rise. The fact that Cube is joining similar platforms already in the business of exposing hidden talent is testimony to this.

However, one thing that will count for this ubiquity is a long-standing relevance that is needed to give the creative industry the necessary push. Hopefully, Cube can justify their emergence by leaving a lasting impression in this industry.
