A legal luminary, Dr. Kole Abayomi, SAN, says the country is in need of moral constitution as it is the only way for it to attain greatness.

Dr. Abayomi, said this during seventh edition of the Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, organised by the department of law, University of Lagos, at the school main auditorium.

According to him, “there are many things going on in this country, compounded by the fact that the economy of this country is no growing” he said.

“It is in focus that we discuss where we go from here. To my mind, we have gone through a lot of conferences and constitution: from Littleton to Macpherson and to the one that granted self governance, to the state to the regions to the independence and Republican constitution. To the creation of more State and yet no one is satisfied, as there is a always a problem to be solve.

“To me it is not the amount of the number, or the contest of the constitution that is important, but it is the attitude of the citizenry to the constitution, after all Britain has no written constitution and for many years, they have manage to be balance”.

“Restructuring can be political, economical or financial and the problem will not be solve. what is important is the moral constitution. Reconstruction that will show humility, love, tolerance, accommodation and will obliterate the divine rights of a particular section to rule us and to continue to do this. That is moral realignment, absolute love, absolute purity, absolute accommodation and with that I am sure Nigeria will best for it”.

The guest Lecturer, Mrs. Funke Adekoya, SAN, in her presentation on ‘Restructuring Nigeria: Pros, Cons and Matter Arising’, said solving Nigeria political and economic problems is dependent on putting in place a strategy and structure that ensure ethnic tensions and rivalries are doused.

“Some have argued that the current six-geopolitical zones should be reconstituted into the Federating units of the country. I find attractive the thinking that Nigeria should devolve more power and responsibilities from the centre to the subnational units, as these units can be organized on a zonal basis to reflect the existing six geopolitical zone, with each zone having its own government and responsible for its own development, very much after the pattern of the regional system of the first republic” she said.

“Taking a cue from the Indonesia and Malaysia system, I think clear that the solution to solving our structural political and economic problems is dependent in putting in place a strategy and structures that ensure that ethnic tensions and rivalries are doused. And thus can only happen if the subnational units have sufficient autonomy and financial independence to enable them implement plans and programmes specific to their constituents’ development needs” she added.
