Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand will be named as the new England captain following the sacking of John Terry.

Steven Gerrard will be the vice-captain for England's World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Ferdinand made his England debut in 1997, and  played for his country at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

He hasn't been a stranger to controversy himself, and was banned from the game for eight months in 2004 for missing a drugs test.

Fabio Capello met with Terry for only 12 minutes at Wembley, making the decision to sack the Chelsea defender as his captain in this World Cup year.

Terry released a short statement, which read: 'I fully respect Fabio Capello's decision.

'I will continue to give everything for England.'

Capello said: 'After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry.

'As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

'When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.
