Sharia: 23-yr-old loses arm over theft

A 23-year-old Hasimu Adamu of Sabon-Birin Village in Sokoto State who broke into a house at Dutse area of Gusau Metropolis in Zamfara State and stole items valued at N71,000 may have his right wrist amputated.

Delivering his judgement, the presiding judge of the Upper Sharia Court II UnguwarYerima, Gusau, Alhaji Mohammad Shinkafi said the suspect confessed to have committed the crime on 7 November 2009 at 10.00 am.

According to the Sharia court judge, the suspect also admitted that he committed the crime because he was jobless.

He told the court that he left his village to Gusau to look for a petty job but life later became so difficult for him.

The suspect maintained that, it was the harsh condition that he was passing through that pushed him to commit the crime.

Alh. Shinkafi disclosed that the suspect had committed an offence which attracts amputation of his arm.

“You know we are practicing Sharia here in Zamfara. And the law says if you steal something whose value is less than N2, 000:00 you will have your hands amputated.

The judge adjourned the case to15th of February, 2010
