In this country, "every aboki with e kettle" is a popular saying and it's used most of the time with varying situations. Many Nigerians, like it or not, are seriously narcissistic. Many are never really of much help to you when you desperately need them. One of these narcissistic tendencies is the deep, infact almost pathological need for control. Yes control. You buy a jersey and everyone wants to tell you that your choice is wrong and that they should have been consulted first. You introduce your girlfriend to people and everyone seems to want to tell you if you are the perfect couple or not, you rent a house in a certain neighbourhood and people be like "eyaah, na there you pack go?" As a lady, your committee of friends would want to choose a guy for you that meets their standards, not yours. When you resist their attempts at control, the saying comes out "leave am oh, every aboki with e kettle". In most cases, they leave you alone but then they lie in wait, waiting for you to come to ruin.
But in all this, I have never seen people react so offended and troubled as to when they see a man who decides to grow his hair a few centimeters high. Why is it so personal? It's hair on the head of someone else. I have never seen anything like it. The passion, anger, vitriol, hurt etc that comes out especially when you ignore the so-called advice (cut the hair, you'll look better). The way Nigerians are so intent on policing others into conformity, if we police our government like this Nigeria will be the best nation in the world. For Christ sakes, it's hair. If it's not natural then it won't grow. Even your sacred photos of Jesus depict a middle aged man with shoulder length hair yet people will quote Bible verses where Paul said not to keep hair.
Please Nigerians, what do you have against a male keeping hair?
