Zone Improvement Plan codes is a system of postal codes used by the US Postal Service since the early 1960s. Zip codes are used for faster sorting of mail and delivery. Originally they consisted of five digits. But in the 1980s these codes were expanded to nine digits, which are written with a hyphen – XXXXX-YYYY. For instance, 25436-7543.

The US Postal Service began to use postal codes in large cities back in 1943 when the postal address was recorded as follows:

Mr. John Walsh

5364 Epiphenomenal Avenue

Minneapolis 18, Minnesota
The number 18 denoted the number of the postal district within the city limits. By the early 1960s, there was a need for a more comprehensive system of postal codes. A new system was adopted in a test mode throughout the United States on July 1, 1963. The “father” of Zip codes is Robert Moon – a postal worker. It was Moon who proposed a new index system back in 1944 when he worked as a postal inspector.

Now you can see that Zip codes apply only to the US. In all other countries, postal codes are used.

Here’s the deal:

All countries use these codes for the same purpose – for mailing.

So, Zip codes are used in the United States. Postal codes are used in other countries including Nigeria. The USPS has codes for overseas countries which are used during handling deliveries. And these codes are equivalent to the Zip codes used within the United States. Nigeria’s zip code is 00176-0000.

Nigeria Zip codes are organized by the Nigerian Postal Service. The country is divided into nine regions. Each region code consists of the first numeral.

Zip code is a mandatory part of filling out the forms of any online application. When specifying the Zip code for Nigeria, many people do it wrong. They fill 234 as Nigeria Zip Code. It is not right. People think it is the international dialing code for Nigerian phone numbers. But when filling out the postal code for Nigeria you should use these codes:

- 110001;

- 23401;

- 00176.

All these codes should work. This is a list of all postal codes for different states in Nigeria.
