Many homes can hardly do without the use of a portable power generator. This is to supplement the power from the national electricity supply. In developing countries like Nigeria where electricity supply is poor, almost all homes will boast of having a generator set. Popular among the low income earners is the small portable generator called ''I better pass my neighbor''.This particular generator was banned lately in Nigeria because of the high number of fatalities caused by it's carbon monoxide generation. In United State about 3,500 persons die each year to power generator fire and about 16,000 injured according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).
Portable generators are very useful but causes fire, electric shock and produces carbon monoxide which is a silent killer. Below are the steps to avoid these hazards.
1.Do not use the generator indoors.
This is to avoid the accumulation of dangerous and poisonous gasses such carbon monoxide. The generator should not be used inside homes, garage, basement, or other enclosed or partially enclosed places.
Do no place the generator close to your windows, doors or vents.
2. Turn off the Generator before refueling.
This is one of the causes of generator fire. The heat or spark from any part can ignite the fuel. Also while refueling avoid pouring fuel on hot parts . You can use funnel to transfer the fuel to avoid spill.
3. Do not store fuel or highly combustible materials close the generator.
This is because the heat from the generator can ignite them and in case of fire they will be easily available source of more fuel to increase the fire.
4. While refueling do no approach the generator with phone or naked light as this can cause fire.
A portable non spark rechargeable light can be used.
5. Ensure the wiring is okay
Make use of a qualified technician to carry out the wiring and transfer switch installations.
6.Avoid electrocution
Do not operate the generator on a wet hand and do not keep it on a wet surface. Also ensure that the wire is fully insulated and use the 3 pin plug for earthing purpose.
7. Install fire alarm in your homes.
A better alarm is the one that can detect fire that has flames, and a smoky fire that has fumes without flames. It is called a "Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm.
8. Ensure you have a fire extinguisher.
Fire extinguisher with a class B rating should be used.
8. Have an escape route
Many have died because they were trapped by fire in the homes. It is very good to have some escape route in each of your rooms and periodically practice withmembers of your household on how to escape in case of fire.
