Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed their spot.
Olivier Giroud was the man of the moment as Arsenal won the Community Shield in a nervous penalty shoot-out on Sunday.

Both Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed their spot kicks before the Frenchman stepped up and smashed past Chelsea's Belgian keeper.

The clash was a tight affair for the most part, and the two sides went into the break level after Gunners new boy Alexandre Lacazette clattered the post in the first 45 minutes.

Per Mertesacker was forced off with a nasty gash to the face following a sickening clash with Gary Cahill and was subsequently replaced by Sead Kolasinac.

Chelsea took the lead moments after the restart when Victor Moses fired home from close range, as the Blues looked to see out the game comfortably.

But a Pedro red card for a reckless tackle on Mohamed Elneny gave the Gunners a glimmer of hope and Serbian left-back Kolasinac grabbed an equaliser.

Giroud then had the final say from the spot to win the shield for Arsenal.

Here's how John Cross rated the performances...

Arsenal
Cech 7

Smart saves and very quick off his line to thwart several Chelsea breaks.

Holding 7

Another mature performance, read danger signs and made good clearances.

Mertesacker 6

Went off early with a bloody wound after nasty clash with Cahill.

Monreal 6

Started on the left of the three, switched to the middle, assured in both roles.

Bellerin 6

Booked. Lively and involved from the right, both in defence and attack.

Elneny 6

Valuable squad player, energetic and determined. But not really a starter.

Xhaka 7

Good range of passing, fabulous shot and brilliant free kick for equaliser.

Oxlade-Chamberlain 6

Not sure Ox will feel left wing back is his best position long term.

Welbeck 7

HIs pace and power caught the eye in Arsenal’s attacks. Faded.

Iwobi 7

Very lively start, quick feet and clearly on a mission to make his mark.

Lacazette 6

Hit the post with a curling effort. Promising signs but disappears in games.

Substitutes
Kolasinac , for Mertesacker, 32 mins, 8

Giroud , for Lacazette, 66 mins, 6

Walcott , for Iwobi, 67 mins, 6

Nelson, for Welbeck, 88 mins

Chelsea
Courtois 7

Fabulous save from Xhaka’s 30 yard thunderbolt. Had a very assured game.

Azpilicueta 6

Booked. Had some wobbly moments in defence, but Azpilicueta fairly solid.

Luiz 6

Read dangerous situations well and made several good headers. Decent game.

Cahill 6

Involved in two clashes of heads - once with Mertesacker and then with Luiz.

Moses 7

The villain of the cup final - sent off after diving - redeemed himself with super goal.

Fabregas 6

Patrolled midfield, picked some good passes and will clearly be key again this season.

Kante 7

Brilliant energy and runs. He gets forward and defends with equal measure.

Alonso 7

Booked. Knows Chelsea want to buy another left back but still produced good display.

Willian 7

Booked. Very harshly given a yellow for diving when replays showed he was clipped.
.......................................................................................................................................
Pedro 6

Sent off. Looked very harsh in a friendly but studs down Elneny’s Achilles.

Batshuayi 7
You have to admire his persistence. Barely got a game last season, but still fighting.
.......................................................................................................................................
Substitutes
Morata , for Batshuayi, 74 mins, 6

Rudiger, for Alonso, 79 mins

Musonda, for Willian, 83 mins
..........................................................................................................................................
Man of the match
Kolasinac 8

Arsenal substitute looks as hard as nails and scored equaliser.
