The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that political power is for uplifting the downtrodden in society and not for amassing wealth and oppressing the weak.

He said this on Thursday during the one year anniversary thanksgiving service organised by the Christians Prayer/Contact Committee for Godwin Obaseki at the Government House in Benin City.

At another event, Obaseki who attended the 90th birthday celebration of his aunt, Deaconess Victoria Ojemudia, described her as an encyclopaedia of the Obaseki family who can comfortably provide any one with useful information about the family.

Speaking further at the thanksgiving service, the governor said political power is about living a life of service to enhance the wellbeing of people especially the oppressed in the society.

“I don’t need to flaunt my power to show that I am the most powerful person in the state. Power is for correcting the anomalies in society and for making life better for the people,” he explained.

He said God never taught us to be wasteful in politics but to use political power to uplift the downtrodden in society, and stressed that “holding political positions does not mean that you should waste scarce resources but to judiciously use these resources to uplift the people.”

Reading from the Bible Book of Psalm, chapter 91, verses 1-6, Obaseki said thanksgiving should not be a day’s event but a way of life and expressed his gratitude to the Christians Prayer/Contact Committee for their role in his election.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Christians Prayer/Contact Committee for Godwin Obaseki, Pastor Eghosa Omuruyi, thanked God for answering their prayers and said that the group was inaugurated to mobilise all Christians for the party’s success at the last gubernatorial election.

Meanwhile, in his tribute to Deaconess Ojemudia, Obaseki described her as “a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart who does not conceive evil against anyone.” He said she affected his life positively as she has always prayed for him.
