Abia, Rivers, Edo, Imo and Bayelsa have emerged the best performing states in the 2016 and 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The quartet led the chart in the performance of school candidates who passed five subjects in the examination, including English and Mathematics, in 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory and the offshore countries of Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Republic and Cote D’Ivoire.

Abia came out strong at 81.54 per cent, followed by Rivers State at 78.59 per cent.

Edo State was third with 77.41 per cent while Imo State recorded 76.46 per cent.

At 74.38 per cent and 71.83 per cent Bayelsa and Anambra states emerged in the fifth and sixth positions nationally.

The ranked performance of states in five subjects in the WASSCE (including English and Mathematics), is released annually by the West African Examination Council, with the latest being the 2016 diet of the examination.

Typically, candidates are expected to have at least five credits, including the two prime subjects, to gain admission into any higher institution of learning in the country.

Other states which recorded a good outing in the examination include Ondo (68.43 per cent, 7th position), Taraba (64.76 per cent, 8th position), Lagos (64.31 per cent, 9th position), Delta (63.43 per cent, 10th position), Enugu (61.14 per cent, 11th position) and Cross River (60.42 per cent, 12th position).

However, the South-West states, often regarded as leaders in the education sector, put up a less sterling performance in the examination. Aside from Ondo, Lagos and Ekiti which emerged in the seventh, ninth and 14th positions respectively, Ogun and Osun states, with 53.24 per cent and 46.77 per cent respectively, were outperformed by five northern states, including Borno, to emerge in the 19th and 24th position nationwide. At 36.69 per cent, Oyo is the least performing of the south west states. It emerged in the 29th position nationwide, falling further below Adamawa, Ebonyi, Kano and Katsina states.

At 14.25 per cent, Yobe State is the least performing on the chart, emerging in number 38. Others include offshore countries (Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Republic and Cote D’Ivoire, 37th position); Zamfara (16.07 per cent, 36th position); Gombe (17.36 per cent, 35th position); Jigawa (18.45 per cent, 34 position); Kebbi (22.65 per cent, 33rd position); Sokoto (29.90 per cent, 32nd position) and Bauchi (33.82 per cent, 31st position).

According to the Head, Public Affairs Unit of the WAEC, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, the state ranking is released annually and sent to ministries of education to assist in the implementation of policies in the education sector.

“The ranking is sent to states so that those who are already doing well will not rest on their oars and those who are not doing very well can look at what the states with best performing candidates are doing in order to improve. It is also to help states to implement their policies in terms of teaching and learning, pupils’ attitude, teacher training, among others,” he said.

Examination Malpractice in ABA, Abia State is second to none in the Nigeria. This is what is giving them edge over other states. Its a pity WAEC is just using what they mark as a yardstick for judgement. Exam malpractice is EVERY in Nigeria but that of ABA in particular in something else. This is very possible because ABA people don't fear anybody not even the so-called WAEC invigilators or external examiners

Thank God for Nigerian Universities atleast. You may sleep with a lecturer to get passed or pay for 'runs' not to be failed but you can never succeed cheating in the exam hall. You know that something is wrong when you see a student who came in with 6B's struggling with a CGPA of 0.47 at the end of 100L and you begin to wonder "what in the world is this"?
