If anyone out there had thought that the British Premier League Season was going to start off in the usual manner, they were in for a solid shocker as the matches played on Saturday went down a completely different lane.

And I am not just talking about the F.C. Chelsea debacle here. Almost all the matches played had some unexpected features with surprises here and there dominating the day’s results.

The day had started on a warning note with the first match going against most predictions and custom as favorites F.C. Liverpool struggled against the home team Watford F.C. Even though the game finally ended up in a 3-3 draw, it could just as well have ended up in a shock defeat for the visiting team.

Then came the matches slated for 3.00p.m. And the warning bells from the 12.45 p.m. game continued to ring in many of the stadia across Britain. And at the end of the day, there were drawn faces to be found virtually everywhere from the Stamford Bridge to Crystal Palace.

The greatest of the surprises of course happened at the Stamford Bridge area of London where the Bridge got a serious shake-up from the marauding guys from Burnley of all places.

A game that had been expected to be a celebration of some sort for the Chelsea faithfuls turned into something else as Burnley took advantage of playing against a 9-man Chelsea by beating the defending champions 3-2 on their home turf!

In the course of the game, Gary Cahill and later on Cesc Fabregas had been given the marching order from the referee for unsportsmanlike acts. The rest as they say, is now history.

If anyone was expecting the newly promoted teams to struggle from the start of the season, that person or person must have been fully disappointed as another of these teams put up an even more superlative performance with Huddersfield Town defeating Crystal Palace by three unreplied goals.

And that they did away from home! 3-0 away win for Huddersfield Town at Crystal Palace I dare repeat. Who would have expected such a result from a newly promoted team?

A lesser magnitude of a surprise result was on hand at Southampton when the hosts failed to beat Swansea F.C. in a match that ended goalless.

With all that took place on Saturday in the Premiership matches, I am quite sure that Manchester United F.C. and their Manager Jose Mourinho do not need anyone to advise them to be very wary of any possible surprises in their home game coming up today against West Ham at the Old Trafford.
