Following the outcome of the referendum meeting held! Sunday afternoon in Abuja by the union leaders, the Academic staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike from Monday 14th August 2017. This the Union leader says is to persuade the Federal government to meet their demands. This came after several branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have voted overwhelmingly for members in both federal and state universities to embark on an indefinite strike to press home the implementation of their demands.
ASUU branches nationwide on Friday held a referendum in line with an earlier directive by the National Executive Council (NEC) to vote whether the strike will be indefinite strike, one month strike, one week warning and no strike.

The meeting of ASUU NEC is currently ongoing at the union’s secretariat at Abuja to deliberate on the outcome of the referendum conducted by the branches.
Feelers from the NEC meeting indicate that several of the branches including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ibadan (UI) and Lagos State University (LASU) voted for an indefinite industrial action.

One of ASUU Zonal Coordinators told our Correspondent that his zone voted overwhelmingly for strike and that the outcome of the referendum conducted on Friday will be collated to enable the union take a position.

Among issues in contention includes, federal government breach of the 2009 FG/ASUU Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed agreement on financing grant to state universities, conditions of service, non implementation of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and re -negotiation of the agreement.

Other outstanding issues are non provision of revitalization funds to public universities, non release of NUPEMCO operational licence, payment of half salaries to members and government owing universities outstanding N880 billion in intervention fund.

Well we Nigerians students are used to it funny enough and bad as it may sound!.

When I got admitted into the university, my dad asked me the year i would graduate i simple added 1 year extra to my supposed normal year of graduation and he asked my why? I told him because of ASUU strike in the future and he replied me thus! "My son is true oo let's just add two years in other not to be disappointed

Good news for Nairaland, there will more traffic to their network as more people will be rendered idle.

Who Education epp. They should go ahead. Nonsense.

I never even enter LASU I don dey fear the strike already cos I no want make 4 years come turn to 5 or 6 yrs oo

If he's, he must have told you that the standard of university education has fallen drastically compared to his time, thanks to government poor funding of universities. I was checking the website of a university in Denmark last week and was amazed that the annual budget of the university is €800 million (about #320 billion). That's probably what our government will use to fund all the federal universities for 3-5 years.

Besides, do you know how much a professor who's been in the public service for more than 3 decades earns and how much those thieves in Abuja and various states earn? A professor earns just about 500k, not to talk of how much those in the lower cadres with PhD, earn. I mean, it's very ridiculous how much they earn when compared with some other federal parastatals. The academic profession should ordinarily attract the best brains but how will that be when a first degree holder can earn as much as 500-700k in banks or multinational companies, while young PhD holders earn about 150k and professors just about 500k?

It's really appalling!
