JERUSALEM — Yisrael Kristal, the world’s oldest man passed away on Friday, 11th, August, 2017, just a month short of reaching the 114th year of birth.

Oren Kristal, a grandson, said he died Friday. “He managed to accomplish a lot. Every year he lived was like a few years for somebody else,” according to The Associated Press. He is survived by two children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Expectedly, Yisrael witnessed several remarkable things during his lifetime. For example, he is one of the few persons on earth to have been alive during the World Wars in 1914 and 1944. He is also one of the remaining survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp too.

He was officially confirmed as the world’s oldest man by the Guinness World Records which verified his claim to the title.

Mr Kristal was born in the village of Zarnow, about 146km from Warsaw, the capital of Poland in 1903.

During his early life he witnessed several tragic events. For instance, his parents died during World War one. He also lost two of his children in the Lodz ghetto while his wife died in Auschwitz , the Nazi concentration camp.

Despite these adversities, he was very optimistic till the time of his death. According to his daughter, ‘’he had a lot of optimism, and always saw only light and good in everything.

What is the secret to his longevity? Speaking at the time of receiving his award last year, he admitted he did not know the secret to a long life. According to Mr Kristal

I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why. There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men then me who are no longer alive. All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost.

The oldest man to have ever lived in recent times is Jiroemon Kimura who was born in 1897. He is the first man in history to have lived to 116 years old and continues to hold the world record for the Oldest man ever, according to the Guinness book of World records. Mr Kimura became the Oldest man ever on 28 December 2012, at the age of 115 years 253 days, breaking the record set by Christian Mortensen of Denmark/USA (1882–1998).

Who is the oldest person that ever lived in recent times?

There have been several claims to this title. However, most of these have been difficult to authenticate. According to the Guinness book of world records, that title belongs to Jeanne Louise who died at the age of 22 years 164 days. Jeanne Louise Calment (France). Born on 21 February 1875 to Nicolas (1837 – 1931) and Marguerite (neé Gilles 1838 – 1924). She died in 1997.

She was born on 21 February 1875, around 14 years before the Eiffel Tower was constructed (she saw it being built), and some 15 years before the advent of movies.

In an interesting twist, her lawyer aged 47 years who felt she was close to the grave at the age of 90 years, offered to pay her 2,500 francs per month until her death, so he could inherit her property. Guess what? She outlived him and ended up collecting double the value of her property.

What could have contributed to her longevity? No one really knows for sure. Her lifestyle involved good things such as exercise-swimming, playing tennis, cycling (she was still cycling until the age of 100) and diet rich in olive oil. However, she also ate lots of sugar rich products such as chocolate and smoked cigarettes from the age from 21 years till the age of 117 years!

Clearly, some genetic factors may have played a role too.

According to an expert ”Mr Kristal’s achievement is remarkable – he can teach us all an important lesson about the value of life and how to stretch the limits of human longevity.”
