I must express my deep and profound disappointment in the way and manner the federal government has chosen to handle the education sector of the Nigerian economy, a sector which is supposed to be described as ‘primus interepers non secondum’; that is first amongst equal and second to nonenone.

Our leaders, including some of the current activist-lecturers enjoyed scholarships and crisis-free academic sessions which unfortunately, the current students could not enjoy. From the foregoing, government is wrong in failing to abide by the terms of the agreement it has with representatives of the lecturers and deserves blame for giving ASUU an excuse to embark on strike once again. Not every parent can afford or willing to send their children to expensive private universities that widen the social gap between the rich and the poor.

I am not in support indefinite strike because of its negative effects on students and other stakeholders, including lecturers. Frequent disruptions in the academic calendar compromise academic quality, frustrate students and prolong the duration of academic programmes. The social costs are immense too, for both students and their families. It is disappointing that ASUU does not consider it appropriate to conduct a thorough scientific study of the repercussions of frequent strikes on various stakeholders within and outside the university system. As academics, they are supposed to manifest an unceasing desire for knowledge and truth.

According to an African proverb which says that; When two elephants fight, it is the grass that gets trampled. As ASUU battles the Federal Government; the questions that come to mind are: Who is suffering for the pains inflicted? Whose eggs are broken? Of course, it is the students who bear the brunt of the whole saga. The students are the trampled grass under these two elephants. Academic calendars are getting more complicated by the day, majority of students are wasting away at home and the delay in obtaining a degree is obvious. The strike does not stop the salaries of the lecturers and many of them made use of this opportunity to do more research and churn out more publications.

If we can have a well-developed educational sector, then we can produce inventors, Nobel laureates and outstanding writers. The Federal Government should remember the immortal words which says that Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it. Let both ASUU and FG act fast for the Interest of the Students.

Watch out for the part two very soon..Thank you for reading.
