Open Letter to Philippe Coutinho
Dear Philip,
You came to liverpool in the year 2012, having toured almost all Europe top teams after been signed by a former Liverpool manager for Inter milan. The journey was not smooth for you as your career at Milan was affected by a change of manager. You were sent out on loan so as to have more game time at Espanyol where you came up against bigger players than you had at Serie A, yet you had no home in your first two teams in Europe.
Then came Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool signed you for a fee in excess of 8 million pounds. The fee was a very small amount at that time considering you were deemed surplus to requirements at Inter. Liverpool FC believed in your talent and you were made a starter at Liverpool. You were surrounded by International players, playing along side two Liverpool legends and a world class player in the form of Luis Suarez now at Barca.
Four years on, the world is now on your shoulder barring last season award to Sadio Mane you claimed two back to back trophies for the best player of the season at Liverpool. This showed how far you have gone and your growing reputation in the team. At a stage like this your service is required very much at L4 with Liverpool now under the tutelage of a world class coach. The team is primed for greatness. The story will only be more interesting with a world class performer like you.
As a concerned fan, over the years Liverpool Fc have lost the services of great talents like, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Xavier Mascherano, Raheem Sterlin and Luis Suarez. And they are always a high profile exit from Anfield. The effect of their departure is always felt for long by fans. You played with Luis Suarez, and I am sure you enjoyed playing alongside him at Anfield. At Liverpool, I believe you have a home, as we are a big family. All the fans love you and you are a prince in Liverpool.
Just take a good look at where you are leaving for, Barcelona is a world class team no doubt. But there seems to be coming the end of an era. Real Madrid has already put the end to the dominance of Barcelona. Which implies Madrid are the team to beat in world football. As an advice to you Mr Coutinho, please stay one more season at Anfield and earn yourself a move to Madrid where better package awaits you. You will also be surrounded by friends from your native Brazil. Going to Barcelona now, would have to mean you are filling the hole left by the departure of Neymar. My dear it will be difficult to do. So your best option remains to stay at Liverpool and show the world what more you can do.
This might look selfish to you but it is the best for you. I wish you all the best, and better years ahead of you at Anfield.
From Dr Nemeth, A Liverpool fan from Nigeria.
