Rinu Ojekunle lives in the Ejigbo area of Lagos state and works as a resource person in a consulting firm in Ikeja.

She leaves home for work every day at around 8 am, and gets to the office 30-45 mins later with mild traffic along the road.

The return journey takes a little longer but she still manages to get home early enough to catch up with her favorite TV programs.

But all these have changed since the rainy season started.

She has to hit the road very early in the morning in order to beat the traffic usually caused by the bad state of the roads from her residence in Ejigbo to her office in Ikeja.

Lagos Roads And Rain – Sworn Enemies?

There is this popular saying that Lagos roads and rain are not best of friends. This is because when it rains most times, the roads become messy which leads to gridlock.

It gets worse if the roads are in a bad state as it slows down movement of vehicles which results in traffic congestion.

When Bounce News visited some communities in Lagos State, it was observed that most of the roads were in a deplorable state.

The roads linking Shasha/Ajako/Bammeke and Egbeda, Oguntade, Orisumbare, Ikotun, Idimu, Ejigbo, Oshodi are in a terrible shape.

A resident in the Shasha area of the state, Kayode Gbariel, said his car visits the mechanic workshop frequently now because of the bad roads.

“As you can see, the road is very bad and it gets flooded when it rains. Only one part of road is passable as the other has been washed away by flood.

"I change my shock absorber every 2-3 months now because of the bad roads", he said.

He pleaded with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to show them mercy by urgently coming to their aid and fixing the bad roads.

A resident of Egbeda, Debo also appealed for an urgent response from the Lagos State government.

He described the abandoned Shasha/Ajako/Bammeke road as a link road to Egbeda, Shasha, Bameke, Oguntade, Orisumbare, Ikotun, Idimu, Ejigbo, Oshodi among others.

He said the link road has suffered neglect in the hands of past governments, who despite all appeals merely glossed over it until they left office.

A bus driver simply known as Baba Gbera who plies Egbeda to Oshodi also lamented the poor state of the roads.

He said that despite effort by residents to fill up the potholes, as soon as it rains, it washes off the filled part again.

He urged the state government to come to their rescue as damages caused to their buses are getting worse every passing hour.

Sooner or Later

An official of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), the agency saddled with the responsibility of maintaining and fixing pot-holes and bad portions on Lagos roads, who spoke to Bounce News on condition of anonymity said the rainy season is the reason why the roads have been neglected.

He, however, assured everyone that the state government will set the machinery in motion as soon as the rainy season is over.

We hope the rehabilitation of these roads commence soon as motorists are the ones bearing the brunt.
