Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has called
on the Lagos State Government to release 180
Ebonyi indigenes held in Lagos for hawking .

Umahi made the call on Thursday in Abakaliki ,
when he received a delegation of Ebonyi
indigenes residing in Onitsha , Anambra, who
visited him over the plight of some indigenes of
the town.

Umahi , represented by his deputy , Dr Kelechi
Igwe, said the government was dismayed by the
report from the Ebonyi Development Association
in Lagos concerning incarcerated 180 indigenes .

“ The 180 victims were accused of contravening a
law of the Lagos State Government on street
trading , but the intriguing aspect is that they had
been incarcerated before the law was enacted.

“ Most of them had spent over two years in
incarceration before the law was enacted, but
they were unfortunately charged under the same
law.

“ I will immediately consult and interact with my
Lagos counterpart to ensure the immediate and
unconditional release of the victims , ” he said .

The governor said the days of treating Ebonyi
citizens as second - class citizens in the country
were over, saying the government would extend
its empowerment schemes to its indigenes
residing across the country .

“ The government would immediately procure
over 130 tricycles to enable hawkers of Ebonyi
origin in Onitsha and environs to quit the trade
and be gainfully employed .

“ We would accommodate over 20 indigenes in
Onitsha in our empowerment scheme , which
would offer them a grant of N 250, 000 ea ch , to
quit street trading and be gainfully employed .
The leader of the delegation and the governor ’ s
Senior Technical Assistant, Onitsha Liaison Office ,
Mr Mathew Njoku , thanked the governor for the
reception and pledged to contribute its quota to
the state ’ s development

“ We thank you for graciously including Ebonyi
indigenes in Onitsha and across the country in
your empowerment schemes because it would
help to eradicate the humiliating experiences they
undergo while hawking and engaging in other
menial jobs . ”

“ Ebonyi indigenes are ranked among the most
successful exporters of goods in Onitsha and are
willing to transfer such business acumen to
enhance the state ’ s economy , ” he said.

what of the people that sell on that challenge roundabout, in fact that challenge roundabout is now an illegal market, have they been arrested? because they are yorubas, all those beggars doing business calling themselves beggars are they not yorubas?

Those are yorubas too, but they caught people who are not in indigenes because of the tribalism in ambodes heart.

When they hawk you complain, they go into drug you complain, they want to leave you in peace and have their own country, you said no. What else do you want them to do? The masters and their slaves have taken over all the federal works and even employed ghosts with their one Nigeria slogan. Put yourself in their shoes and tell me what you expect them do. Outside civil crevice works, tell me other works your people do to earn a living?

This Ebonyi people don't have any other business acumen than hawking gala, soft drinks and handkerchief.

They constitute public nuisance wherever you find them and turn violent when government decide to dislodge them from street and highway hawking. Most also engage in criminal activities here in port Harcourt.

They should all be sent back to their state instead of polluting other people's state with their Yeye life. This is not what the right to live and do business anywhere in the country says.

It would be unreasonable for the governor of a state to empower its citizens living in another state. The empowerenent in this case is selective and discriminatory and should be condemned.

It is contrary to equity, good conscience and also unconstitutional to incarcerate any person for a long stretch of time without trial or to charge them to court under a retroactive law. The affected persons were arrested n jailed long before the law banning hawking was enacted. Why should such legislation then be applied retroactively?

These are the many reasons why that figurative expression of 'zoo' is used to describe Nigeria but myopic dullards feel offended because they think they have been literally turned into animals...who knows though? I guess that's why they start braying n barking like the actual animals.

It takes the height of lawlessness, impunity and ultimate disregard for law, order and the rule of law to do this kind of rubbish and expect to get away with it. Such madness is what jungles n zoos are made of.

What kind of state government goes about 'empowering' its citizens resident and Hawking in another state? Why not put in place policies that would enable them return to Ebonyi so they can contribute positively to the economy of Ebonyi?

Really? Unfortunately that is what the state approved fixation on state of origin rather than residence has wrought. Citizens do not enjoy full rights n benefits outside of their states rather they are consciously excluded and discriminated against contrary to the provision of the constitution against discrimination.
If there is no wholesale overhaul, then it is clear the country has approved such selective and discriminatory 'empowerment'... What then are u condemning?

If they want 'full rights n benefits' outside their states of origin, as you put it, then they had better return to their states. Besides you cannot prove that the state government of anambra-Onitsha is deliberately discriminating against Ebonyi indigenes. Instead of 'empowering' gala hawkers resident in Onitsha, as the Ebonyi state government is proposing to do, they are better off using that money to put in place policies that would stem the tide of Ebonyi indigenes running out of their states in droves to sell gala at Onitsha.

Having studied behaviors of Yoruba States when it comes to Public Administration I would be surprised that there is any grain of truth in what Umahi charged Lagos of doing.

On the other hand, Ibo States are reputable for running their admimistrations carelessly and with abandon of citizens welfare.
Case example, Umahi is going to empower citizens living in other states and make available to them resources unavailable to vitizens living in the state. What message does that put across? If you want this resource migrate out of here, go to other states. Very irresponsible!

Isn't the bold part contradictory? If they want something outside their stars they should go back to their states...
Meanwhile, no country desirous of real development and growth lays emphasis on 'origin'. Look around and read, national policies are painstakingly designed to ensure equal n fair treatment to all without preference. Furthermore, people migrate to other places for different reasons including to earn better living prospects. I'm trying to avoid coming across as whining but the unfortunate facts today show that there are better prospects in Lag than in Ebonyi. This has been institutionalised over decades with first being the former FCT and concentration of industries and whatnot.

If a more holistic national outlook had been in place, there would gave been a better spread of policies and development opportunities rather than concentration in one place. Until that is reversed or tempered I'm afraid these occurrences of people without solid sources of income migrating to other places will continue and they are protected by the constitution even though it is not implemented.

Don't blame the victims of a skewed system but rather sympathise with them and work towards more even development. States are only trying to catch up but staying attached to the apron strings of monthly federal allocation bodes no good.

Unless we didn't read the same article, what is being offered as empowerment is substantial funds and a mobile form of transportation (keke) to reduce dependence on the unhealthy hawking practice. While this might not be the best policy, I daresay that transport business and seed capital for business is not in any way encouraging the continued practice of hawking.

So many tribalist on NL. Ambode should release the hustler with immediate effect. Man must eat and since the government has failed in providing means of live hood for us men must source themselves.

Ambode should face his work and leave the guys alone. Lagos is now as dirty as something else now, Fashola we miss you.
