NSCDC officials arrest man in Abeokuta for attempting to commit suicide over Lapo loan

Men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested a man for attempting to commit suicide over unpaid Lapo loan.

The 34-year-old Abiodun Onipede , was arrested by the NSCDC officials during a security patrol in a forest along Ayetoro road on the outskirt of Abeokuta in Ogun State.

The man had already tied a rope around his neck and he was about to hang himself on a tree, when he was sighted by the patrol team.

Onipede who claimed to be a former staff of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), told Rock city F.M journalists after he was rescued, that he took the decision to hang himself because he was unable to repay the loan he took from LAPO, a microfinance loan firm.

Onipede said that he dropped out of Federal College of Education, Osiele in Abeokuta at 200 level, and had to abandon his job at TRACE for a year. This forced him to relocate to Akwa Ibom state to find other financial means. He said his financial problems made it difficult to pay the hospital bills of sick child who eventually died in 2009.

Onipede explained that when he came back to Abeokuta from Akwa Ibom state, he discovered he had been sacked by TRACE, and he had to obtain loan LAPO to start a commercial tricycle business. Unfortunately, he was unable to repay the loan regularly and this frustration forced him to attempt to take his life.

Spokesman of the Ogun State command of NSCDC, Ogbonnaya Dike, said the man will be handed over to the Nigerian police, Ogun state command after the completion of investigation

Why always Lapo bank?

Seems they have a way of frustrating their debtors into getting suicidal

Dear Lord, as I go about looking for what I will eat, may I not meet what will eat me.

Amen.
