You can get it free . Just intstall lets encrypt. Or why don't you host your site on digital ocean and install cloudflare. Ssl is easy and free to get

Also, SSL does not make your website secure.

It only means the data in transit between the browser (the person checking your website) and the server (your website) is encrypted.

Https is a choice selection, you can easily make on your cpanel before you design the website and its becoming live. Contact your designer not developer as you called him, but he may need to build the site all over. It is simple as ABC

Note: For bloggers, I used Cloudflare to enable HTTPS on my blog

SSL comes with headache it is adversible to use the same guy that setup the site for you ...and besides some hosting comapnies are giving it free while some are selling it which ever way once it has been setup ur URL should be https and in green color ...least I forget you can make use if cloud flare

I will advice you allow your hosting company do it for you and if you want to learn by the ropes, start with cloudflare but you must be ready to browse for resources to aid your learning online. I once used cloudflare for my site and it refused some applications on my site from loading especially those considered third party applications.

If you are not using payment cards on your site, forget https or you ask your designer to re-direct such sensitive applications through your .htaccess.

With all due respect sir, if you're collecting data (username, password, etc.) from your users then SSL is a nessecity though it doesn't guarantee total security.

That Nairaland isn't using it shouldn't be the yardstick for advising the OP againt using one. Mind you SSL is now considered a factor when ranking a website on major search engines so a blog needs one too.
