Supporting Climate Finance in Nigeria and Africa

By Pelumi Olugbenga

The United Nations Climate Framework Convention on Climate Change defines climate finance as local, national or transnational financing, which may be drawn from public, private and alternative sources of financing. Climate finance is critical to addressing climate change because large-scale investments are required to significantly reduce emissions, notably in sectors that emit large quantities of greenhouse gases. Climate finance is equally important for adaptation, for which significant financial resources will be similarly required to allow countries to adapt to the adverse effects and reduce the impacts of climate change.

Over the years, Nigeria and the continent of Africa has largely turned blind eyes and deaf ears to climate finance. More often than not, governments at different levels have claimed it has more "pressing priorities". This is rather unfortunate; as the survival of humanity must always come first. Unfortunately, the lack of interest in climate finance has made Nigeria and many parts of Africa vulnerable to unfavorable climate realities.

For Africa to fully maximize its potentials, it is very much imperative for its leaders to pay greater attention to climate finance.Recent spate of devastating flooding has damaged big potentials in the agricultural sector while displacing thousands and millions of people. The hurricane harvey and hurricane irma in far away america should keep African leaders on their toes on the need to be proactive when dealing with mother nature. The weight of climate finance does not lie on government alone. Private and corporate sector has a big role to play as well. These private establishments must also factorize climate finance into their responsibilities. We all can only survive in a healthy environment, let's support a better environment for us and generations to come.

Why should we pay more attention to climate finance when our people are in serious poverty. Moreover our contribution to global warming is no minute and negligible. Let those that destroyed it take care if it. No more modern colonialism

So we should leave our much needed infastructural development to face a problem we contributed some minute to. I am very much aware of the impact but it should be more of questioning developed nations.
Let Africa grow in peace.
