The Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has disclosed that his administration will not promote any teacher in the state without recourse to their competence, efficiency and effective service delivery.
Akeredolu made the disclosure when the leader of Association of Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) in the state ,visited him in his office in Akure, the state capital.
The governor said, the era of mass promotion for teachers in state without competence has gone forever.
Akeredolu noted that some civil servants who read education related courses and are idle in various ministries, department and agencies of government.
He said henceforth they will be trained and deployed to schools because the government cannot afford to recruit now due to huge wage bill.
Akeredolu assured that the issue of Tutor-Generals’ appointment would be looked into when considering other appointments.
While assuring them that Diaries, Registers, Lesson notes for teachers and other essential materials would be made available to Schools as soon as possible, the governor charged the teachers to always give their best to produce world class students in the state.
He informed that public schools across the state will be renovated, saying more teachers would soon be provided to end teachers shortage.
According to him, ” Performance based on competent delivery of services would henceforth be the yardstick for promotion of teachers in our state .
“As a government policy, we will no longer mass-promote teachers. It is an executive order. Whoever is not qualified will not be promoted. ”
He promised to convene an education summit that would enable government and stakeholders brainstorm on how to reposition the education sector.
Speaking earlier, the ANCOPSS President, Comrade Michael Adeyanju lauded the state government for paying up the debt owed the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) which had caused a delay in the release of the May/June 2017 WASSCE result.
Adeyanju who said the last set of teachers were recruited in 2007, lamented the acute shortage of Teaching and Non-Teaching staff in schools occasioned by retirement.
He appealed to the governor to assist them with the payment of running grants to enable them pay their creditors and to take off effectively by September for the new session.
